Ryanair cancelled flights list: Travel advice as pilots stage walkout

Kenny Jacobs chief marketing officer of Ryanair during a news conference in Frankfurt Germany

Dozens of Ryanair flights into and out of United Kingdom will not take place as scheduled on Friday as a result of a strike by pilots in Europe. But the figure could rise to 82 flights if routes between the Dutch city of Eindhoven and the Spanish cities of Reus and Valencia are finally canceled, after a court said on Thursday that Dutch pilots may join the walkout.

Germany will be worst hit, with 250 cancellations at ten airports after the country's Cockpit union called on pilots towalk out from 3.01am local time (2.01am BST).

Ryanair, which is based in the Swords area of Dublin, called the strikes "regrettable and unjustified" and urged unions to come back to the negotiating table.

Ryanair, which flies in 37 countries and carried 130million people last year, averted widespread Christmas strikes last year by agreeing to recognise trade unions for the first time in its 33-year history.

Unions are pushing for better pay and conditions at Ryanair and want collective labour contracts governed by local laws, rather than Irish ones. But a court said yesterday Ryanair pilots in the Netherlands could not be prevented from doing so.

Europe's largest low-priced airline recognized unions in December, but talks have so far failed to produce agreements on improved working conditions, or for contracts to be governed by the laws of the country where workers are based, rather than by Irish legislation.

It's perhaps one of the most disheartening feelings in the world when you've spent your hard earned cash, done your holiday shopping and told everyone and their dog that you're off to spend a holiday in the sun, to then be told that lift-off isn't quite ready to happen.

The latest Ryanair strike is taking place in five countries.

.

German pilot representatives said on Wednesday they were joining the strike action because they want pay and work conditions comparable to those at Ryanair's competitors.

Will Ryanair be offering compensation for travellers?

At Charleroi Airport, Belgium's second largest and a major Ryanair hub in the region, striking staff gathered in the departure hall and held up banners reading "Ryanair must change- Respect us".

But its combative chief executive Michael O'Leary has also warned the airline may shift jobs and planes to more profitable areas if the turmoil continues.
