Samsung begins mass production of industry-first 4-bit consumer SSDs

'As we expand our line-up across consumer segments and to the enterprise, 4-bit terabyte-SSD products will rapidly spread throughout the entire market. The move from TLC to QLC, however, typically brings with it a hit to performance - but Samsung claims that a combination of somehow using a three-bit SSD controller and its proprietary TurboWrite technology avoids that, keeping the performance equal with its TLC-based equivalents. At the time, it ensured consumers that the new memory solutions would allow for the creation of solid state drives (SSDs) with significantly increased capacity.

The new SSD tech will come in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB capacities and will fit the 2.5in SATA drive form factor, which should be a boon for people wanting to create compact PC with plenty of storage.

Samsung has announced that it will begin mass production of the industry's first 4-bit (QLC, quad-level cell) 4-terabyte (TB) SATA solid-state drive (SSD) for consumers. So these new 4TB QLC drives will still hit 540MB/s sequential read speeds and 520MB/s for writes.

Tesla’s Board Has Met Several Times to Discuss Going-Private Proposal
The statement says that Elon started discussing taking the company private with the board last week. Tesla's shares were down 2.1 percent at $371.70 on Wednesday after closing up 11 percent on Tuesday.

Samsung is also planning on adding 4-bit fifth-generation V-NAND technology to its M.2 NVMe SSDs geared toward the enterprise.

With its new 1 terabit 4-bit V-NAND chip, Samsung said it will also be able to efficiently produce a 128GB memory card for smartphones which will lead the charge toward higher capacities. And although Samsung didn't share any pricing information for the new SSDs, the language in the press release makes it clear that these are aimed at consumers (and thus will be more affordable). We now have no indication on pricing. Probably not, yet. Price could be the spark that sets off the storage revolution, but at the moment Samsung isn't giving that vital piece of info away.
