Shooter in Florida 'Stand Your Ground' case charged with manslaughter

The man who fatally shot a father over a parking space in Florida - leading to renewed scrutiny over the state's "stand your ground" law - was arrested Monday and charged with manslaughter, state prosecutors said.

Michael Drejka, 47, was arrested and booked into the Pinellas County Jail, the State Attorney's office said.

The case first gained national attention after the Pinellas County sheriff announced that Drejka would not be charged under the state's "stand your ground" law because he acted in self-defense. Seconds later, Drejka pulled a handgun and shot McGlockton as he backed away.

After last month's shooting, the owner of the Circle A store told FOX 13 that Drejka had confronted others for parking in the handicapped spot before.

McGlockton family attorney Benjamin Crump - who gained national prominence representing the family of Trayvon Martin after the black teen's fatal shooting by a Hispanic man in 2012 - said in a statement Monday "it's about time" Drejka was arrested. Officials said Drejka accused her of having parked in a handicapped space without the proper permit.

"He believed that McGlockton was going to come back at him, and he fired in a very short amount of time - four-seconds, probably; somewhere in that range".

'Every man raises his kid to be that ultimate man for his family, ' McGlockton said.

City start title defence with fine Emirates win
The Gunners created a couple of opportunities late on but things ended in frustrating fashion despite a number of positives. It remained 1-0 for the rest of the first half, before the visitors killed off the match just after the hour mark.

McGlockton's family have been pushing for charges to be filed against Drejka.

"I firmly stand behind the decision by the State Aattorney's Office to charge Michael Drejka with manslaughter for killing Markeis McGlockton".

The dispute with Drejka started when he yelled at McGlockton's girlfriend, Britany Jacobs - who was in a auto with two of the couple's small children - outside a store for parking in a handicapped space.

Sheriff Bob Gualtieri recently stood by his decision not to arrest Drejka, saying the man was defending himself and had claimed he was in fear for his life. Under a change made by the Legislature a year ago, if a suspect raises a stand-your-ground defense, prosecutors must prove the law doesn't apply.

Footage of the shooting was recorded on CCTV outside the convenience store and shows Mr McGlockton rushing back inside the building while clutching his chest.

"The state attorney's office is doing what Sheriff Gualtieri has failed to do thus far -seeking justice for the death of Markeis McGlockton", said Democratic gubernatorial candidate Chris King in a statement released this afternoon. "I have full faith that this truth will prevail to punish this cold-blooded killer who angrily created the altercation that led to Markeis' needless death", Crump continued. Witnesses said he collapsed in front of his son, waiting inside.

The police say Mr Drejka was co-operative when they arrived and had a valid concealed weapons licence.
