Steven Seagal named Russian special envoy to US

Actor Steven Seagal attends the SMASH Global V pre Oscar fight at Taglyan Complex in Los Angeles California

More recently, Mr. Seagan received Russian citizenship in 2016 and was personally handed his Russian passport by President Vladimir Putin.

But on Saturday, Russia honoured Seagal again, this time with a position as a special envoy to the United States.

Russian President Vladimir Putin presented a Russian passport to the U.S. actor in 2016, and now Seagal will expand his ties, serving as a goodwill ambassador.

It would be recalled that an alleged Russian spy with apparent ties to a Donald Trump campaigner in has been in the news concerning Russia's interference with the 2016 presidential election.

Was Steven Seagal's "bromance" with Russia's Putin behind Ukraine's blacklist?

The Flight of Fury star, still popular with Russian audiences, has recently defended the Russian government over claims that it meddled in 2016 U.S. elections.

The actor, who was granted Russian citizenship in 2016, has robustly defended the Russian leader's policies and once told Piers Morgan on ITV's Good Morning Britain that anyone who thought Putin had attempted to rig the U.S. elections was "stupid".

'It's a case of people's diplomacy intersecting with traditional diplomacy, ' the ministry said.

The Foreign Ministry announced the move Saturday on its Facebook page.

Seagal was cited by Kremlin-backed TV station RT as welcoming the appointment.

For more than a decade Seagal, who according to his own website is 66, has been a regular visitor to Russian Federation. He has praised Putin's annexation of Crimea, for example, and last year, Kiev banned him from entering Ukraine for five years, claiming he "committed socially unsafe actions" that could threaten its security.

Seagal's grandmother was born in Vladivostok, and the actor and Putin share a passion for martial arts.
