Swedish crown jewels stolen in brazen heist

In a scene reminiscent of the movie The Italian Job, thieves have stolen some of Sweden's crown jewels from a cathedral and escaped in a speedboat.

Britain's own crown jewels were almost stolen in 1671 by Anglo-Irish Colonel Thomas Blood, who was captured as he fled the Tower of London with St Edward's Crown, the Scepter with the Cross, and the Sovereign's Orb.

The theft occurred just before noon on Tuesday, and police quickly had helicopters, patrols, and search dogs looking for the thieves but their efforts have so far proved fruitless, Dangardt said.

King Karl IX died in 1611 and his wife Queen Kristina in 1625.

It is believed the thieves then fled via the vast system of lakes west of Stockholm.

The two men dashed to a boat docked nearby.

"It's 1-0 to them right now", police spokesperson Thomas Agnevik said.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chopra will play the "love interest" of Pratt's character Duncan, but there are no specifics. The mega-budget movie is now in pre-production and Universal is eyeing a June 28, 2019 release, reports THR.

Police have appealed to the public for any information that may lead to the men's arrest.

The crown jewels were on display in Strangnas Cathedral situated 100 kilometers from Stockholm.

The burial site for Sweden's 17th century royals, the Gothic-style cathedral is built mainly in red bricks, and belongs to the Lutheran church.

He said the jewels were priceless and asked people to be on the lookout for the suspects.

In 2013, 16th-century copies of King Johan III's crown, orb and scepter were stolen from the cathedral in the central Swedish city of Vasteras, 60 miles west of the capital Stockholm, during a nighttime burglary.

A witness, who is getting married in the Strängnäs Cathedral next week, told local news channel Aftonbladet he contacted the police.

'I think it's bad, it's despicable that people would steal from a holy building and take something of historic and monetary value.
