There Is an Absolutely Gigantic Rogue Planet Wandering Our Galactic Neighbourhood

Mysterious gigantic rogue planet spotted lurking outside our solar system

The rogue body is almost large enough to be considered a gas giant planet and it offers researchers the opportunity to study these massive objects, shedding light on their magnetic realities.

"This particular object is exciting because studying its magnetic dynamo mechanisms can give us new insights on how the same type of mechanisms can operate in extrasolar planets - planets beyond our solar system", lead study author Melodie Kao, an astrophysicist at Arizona State University, said in a statement from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory published August 2.

"This object is right at the boundary between a planet and a brown dwarf, or "failed star", and is giving us some surprises", Dr Melodie Kao and astronomer at Arizona State University told The Independent.

Those are the processes that this new object, named SIMP J01365663+0933473, might help astronomers learn more about.

Astronomers have stumbled upon an enormous planet which is some 20 light years away from our Sun. It's a massive 200 times the strength of Jupiter's magnetic field.

The giant planet lies just 20 light-years from Earth and was spotted with the Very Large Array (VLA) telescope in New Mexico, thereby becoming the first planetary-mass object to ever be detected through radio telescopy, Science Alert reports.

She added: 'It was definitely new territory for us and when you have a new baby coming into the world. Family memories we were creating. "Kendall has my back in this season, you'll see".

The planetary-mass object has been classified as rogue meaning it's free-floating and is not hitched to any parent star. They were also originally not thought to emit radio waves.

Despite its weight, the newly discovered planet has a radius only 1.2 times that of Jupiter, the study said. However, solitary brown dwarfs do not have a solar wind from a nearby star to interact with.

The team is particularly excited by the new research because it relies in part on radio observations of the object's auroras - which means that radio telescopes may be able to identify new planets by their auroras.

Brown dwarf masses are notoriously hard to measure, and at the time, the object was thought to be an old and much more massive brown dwarf.

The unusually strong magnetic field "presents huge challenges to our understanding of the dynamo mechanism that produces the magnetic fields in brown dwarfs and exoplanets and helps drive the auroras we see", said Caltech's Gregg Hallinan.

The first of such astronomical bodies was observed in 1995 and the scientists are still trying to understand more about the radio emissions and magnetic fields of five brown dwarves.
