Trump Threatens Canada With Auto Tariffs If NAFTA Talks Fail

Mexico the Focus of the WH NAFTA Redux Canada on Hold

U.S. President Donald Trump is renewing his attack on Canada over trade. "Will tax cars if we can't make a deal", reports the Toronto Star.

Donald Trump launched a fresh auto-tariff threat against Canada late Friday at a time when Ottawa finds itself in a holding pattern on NAFTA negotiations as it awaits the completion of one-on-one talks between the United States and Mexico. In fact, the U.S. government decided in June to end the exemption from steel and aluminum tariffs from the EU, Canada and Mexico.

'Canada must wait, ' Trump posted to Twitter.

"Overall, while the recent push confirms our view that an agreement is just a matter of time, an early deal would help to further diminish uncertainties that have hampered investment in Mexico since President Trump was elected, nearly two years ago".

The tweet comes amid ongoing tepidness about when NAFTA renegotiations will resume.

Khabayan, echoing the automakers themselves, pointed out that vehicle parts often travel between the U.S., Mexico and Canada several times before final assembly.

Adam Austen, a spokesman for Canada's foreign minister, added: "We're glad Mexico and the U.S. continue to work out their bilateral issues". "Oftentimes, when you have to compromise with a whole bunch of countries, you get the worst of the deals", Kudlow said on June 5.

But he threatened Canada with auto tariffs if the USA and Canada can't forge a deal.

"But as I said before: nothing is closed until everything is closed".

The U.S., for instance, uses trade barriers to protect sugar, peanuts and tobacco.

Industry officials also said the USA team had barely moved from its demands last May of a 75-percent overall regional content threshold with 40-45 percent content from high-wage zones - effectively the United States and Canada - with the only substantial change a slightly longer phase-in time.

The President-elect appears to have struck a rapport with Trump after promising to improve Mexico's economy and security when he takes office in December. But the US side was sticking to a hard stance in the final stretch of the year-old NAFTA talks, trying to extract concessions as another late August deadline for a deal approaches, one industry representative said. Trump has made this threat on several occasions and those in the industry have expressed concern about the impact that could have throughout North America.
