Tsitsipas upsets Anderson in thriller to reach Toronto final

Alexander Zverev rafael Nadal

Tsitsipas, who stood well back of the baseline when receiving the South African's blistering serves, managed the only service break of the game in the third game of the second set with an overhead smash.

The umpire apologised to the visibly agitated 20-year-old, with the scream clearly putting him off his stroke.

'I can only make an announcement, that's all I can do, ' the chair umpire told Tsitsipas. 'This trophy means a lot after playing my first Masters 1000 final.

World number one Rafael Nadal overcame birthday boy Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece to claim victory at the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

The kid beat four top-10 players to make it to the Rogers Cup final.

Tsitsipas duly held serve and then broke Nadal to level at 5-5 in the second set, although Nadal eventually found a way through and duly secured a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory. He fought back from a break point again in the eighth and the set went all the way to a tiebreak.

It was still an incredible week for Tsitsipas, who will move from 27th to 15th when the new world rankings are released Monday.

The headlines will be that Rafael Nadal won the Rogers Cup in Toronto, but it is not his performance that has drawn the most praise.

Tsitsipas beat the fourth-seeded Anderson after topping seventh-seeded Dominic Thiem, ninth-seeded Novak Djokovic and second-seeded defending champion Alexander Zverev to reach his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 semifinal.

"I try to play every match with the highest possible passion, it's a special feeling that I have on court".

The young man had the pleasure of helping with the toss, before getting to have his photo taken with Nadal and Tsitsipas.

Tsitsipas, who became the first unseeded finalist at the Canadian event since Germany's Nicolas Kiefer in 2008, would force a set point on Nadal's serve.

"I am very sorry to announce that I won't be playing in Cincinnati this year", Nadal wrote on Twitter.

"I didn't even have this in my head", Tsitsipas said of reaching the final. "I pushed her on her backhand, then I could just receive a shorter ball, an easier ball for me to open the court", Halep said. "Obviously I'm sad I lost, but losing to the number one player isn't too bad".
