Washington Open: Andy Murray beats Marius Copil to reach quarter-finals

Andy Murray

The veteran Scotsman, who underwent hip surgery in January, edged Romania's Marius Copil 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-6 (4) in a third-round match at the Citi Open that started at midnight and ended at 3:02 a.m. ET on Friday.

Copil hit 20 aces during a contest which lasted more than three hours, but it was Murray who prevailed 7-4 in a final-set tie-break played in front of a sparse crowd.

What made the moment even more powerful, was that the stadium's speakers were playing Semisonic's track "Closing Time".

Up next for Murray will be a meeting with rising Australian star Alex de Minaur, who came from a set down to upset South Korean Hyeon Chung 2-6 6-4 6-2.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Murray said he "potentially" could consider not playing his next game. The recovery time is very limited to this point and I think that De Minaur is the sort of player that really will take advantage of any signs of frailties from Murray.

"When you're expected to come back and perform the next day, I think that's unreasonable". It is the Briton's latest ever finish on court, surpassing by one minute a match that... It's not good for the players, not good, I don't think, for anyone involved in the event. It's not good for fans, TV. "And I'm disappointed with that, because I know that the weather's tricky and I know it is for the scheduling, but it's a very hard position to be in".

Speaking about his condition after the Copil match, Murray said: "It doesn't feel great, just now".

"(I just wanted to) control the points and enjoy the battle, just get out there and try to do what I know that I can.

After taking a 5-0 lead in the opening-set tiebreaker, Murray dropped seven consecutive points to hand the lead over to Copil.

Andy Murray came into this particular encounter with two important match-wins under his belt.

Another breaker was required to decide the match, yet Copil's backhand into the net handed Murray victory after a three-hour marathon.
