Why 'Fortnite' bypassing Google Play could be a security nightmare

How To Get Android 9 Pie Digital Wellbeing Feature On Essential Phone, OnePlus 6 Right Now

By now, everyone who's been paying attention to news about Fortnite on Android knows that it'll only be available via Epic's site after the Samsung exclusivity period ends, and not on the Play Store.

Fortnite is the biggest mobile game release since Pokemon GO, but unlike Pokemon GO, you can't download it from the Google Play Store.

All Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy Tab S4 users will get an exclusive Fortnite Galaxy skin that can help them stand apart in the game. You can toggle these apps on to permanently stay in your app drawer or just add a simple home screen shortcut. Additionally, to download files outside of Play Store requires users to tinker around with security permissions. The game will instead be available from Epic's servers cutting Google out completely.

Google isn't very happy about this as they seem to put Fortnite's main competitor PUBG at the top of search results when someone searches for the aforementioned game. The game will appear in the Samsung Game Launcher and in the Galaxy Apps store. The second is through the Epic Games website where if you don't have a compatible phone you'll simply be signed up to the Beta.

Whatever the case is, Google's open-source ideology will cost it $50 million over the course of the year should Epic not bring Fortnite on the Play Store. Epic probably thinks that having the most popular game in the world gives it enough reach to go its own way.

There are now two places that you can go to either download Fortnite, or at least sign up to be included in the Beta launch.
