Zimbabwe election: Zanu-PF 'has most seats', incomplete results show

Chamisa

Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu-PF party has won the majority of seats in parliament after sweeping rural constituencies by huge margins, official results show.

Robert Mugabe's old party Zanu PF have claimed victory in the first election held in Zimbabwe since the former dictator was pushed out of office previous year. "The strategy is meant to prepare Zimbabwe mentally to accept fake presidential results".

Under Mugabe, elections were marred by fraud and often deadly violence, with the European Union mission banned since 2002.

The European Union election observer mission expressed "serious concerns" as Western and other observers gave their first assessments of whether the vote, while peaceful, was free and fair - crucial for lifting worldwide sanctions on the once-prosperous country.

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called for calm and patience, putting the safety of Zimbabweans first.

"This time around if anyone tries to steal our vote, rwendo rwuno kunofiwa (there will be bloodshed)", he said.

"The longer it lasts that the results of the presidential election is not known, the more lack of credibility it provides", Brok said.

It cited concerns that the voters' roll had not been released prior to the poll, about a fifth of results from the presidential ballot were not published outside polling stations and that some voters had been "deliberately displaced".

The BBC's Shingai Nyoka reports that the announcement on the presidential poll was not made because representatives of some of the 23 candidates had failed to turn up to verify the results.

On Tuesday former MDC finance minister Tendai Biti and ZESN, the main domestic election monitor, said one in five polling stations - more than 2 000 in all - had not physically posted tallies on their doors, as required by law.

"We are working flat-out", commission chairwoman Priscilla Chigumba told journalists in the capital.

Mnangagwa, a former deputy president who fell out with Mugabe and then took over from him, has said his showing in the election was "extremely positive" while urging people to wait for official results.

It followed a surprise press conference at which he stunned observers by calling for voters to reject Zanu-PF, his former party.

"What you see here is real support - not people being brought on buses like ZANU-PF does", he said.

The observers also flagged a misuse of state resources, including food aid, instances of intimidation and bias among traditional leaders and state media, which it said were all used to sway the election in favor of the ruling party.

Officers had been facing off through a locked gate against protesters who brandished opposition party banners, lit fires and chanted slogans against the ruling ZANU-PF party.
