Bills' Vontae Davis retires at halftime of Sunday's loss to the Chargers

5 takeaways from the Bills loss to the Chargers

That's what the veteran cornerback said after making the unusual decision to retire at halftime of Buffalo's loss to the Chargers Sunday.

It was a shock, and also a bit amusing given that the cornerback left his team in the middle of a blowout loss after sustaining an even bigger blowout in Week 1.

"This isn't how I pictured retiring from the NFL", Davis said in the statement.

"I never have seen that. I've never heard anything like that", the Bills' Kyle Williams said of Davis's decision. He briefly returned to the game but later left for good, finishing the day with 39 rushing yards on nine carries to go with 29 receiving yards on four catches. "But I hold myself to a standard". He said people on the sidelines said Davis wasn't coming back out and retired.

He recorded one tackle in the loss to Los Angeles. Mentally, I always expect myself to play at a high level, ' he wrote. "But physically, I know today that isn't possible and I had an honest moment with myself".

Hurricane Helene could bring severe weather to the United Kingdom next week
A yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office with winds of up to 70mph expected from Monday evening. The forecaster has said strong winds look likely to affect Waterford and the counties of south Leinster.

After 10 years in the league and having secured a one-year deal in February - that included a base salary of $2.25 million, a $1.5 million signing bonus, $2 million guaranteed and additional roster bonuses - Davis abruptly announced Sunday that he was done with football.

"I think the only thing to say is he's where he needs to be right now".

The Bills' Rafael Bush echoed that language, saying (via the Buffalo News), "I did lose respect for him as a man".

"And truthfully, I do not because the season is long, and it's more important for me and my family to walk away healthy than to willfully embrace the warrior mentality and limp away too late", he said in the statement. "I just felt like we needed a spark".

The Chargers gained 284 yards in the first half, the most the Bills have allowed before halftime since 2013.
