Croatia Through To Face France In Davis Cup Final

Tennis umpire Carlos Ramos refuses to address the Serena Williams controversy

Croatia raced to a commanding 2-0 lead over the United States on the opening day of their Davis Cup semi-final in Zadar on Friday. In the first rubber Borna Coric, world number 18, justified his favourite's tag and defeated Steve Johnson 6-4, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3.

Tiafoe made his opponent work hard in the third before the Croatian won the tiebreaker 7-5 to give his country a solid lead after day one.

It left the tie resting on the outcome of Borna Coric's match with US debutant Frances Tiafoe in the fifth rubber, with the victor guaranteed to take his country into November's final against France, who beat Spain in the other semi.

The winner of this tie will take on the victor of the other semifinal clash pitting defending champion France against Spain in the final to be held on November 23-25.

While Coric proved more consistent in the end, Tiafoe's ability to run down shot after shot dragged many points on longer than expected.

"I'm just focusing on this tie and working again".

Cilic was warned by chair umpire Carlos Ramos, the same official who issued three code violations to Serena Williams during the US Open final, after slamming his racket to the ground.

Doubles specialist Mike Bryan's decision to come out of Davis Cup retirement gave the United States a much-needed lift.

Judge sent a letter through his attorney Barbara Van Gelder to the Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Sen. Ford is willing to appear before Congress, and Conway urged the Senate Judiciary Committee to hear her testimony under oath.

"I didn't know Ramos was sitting in the chair".

The 29-year-old Cilic raced through the first set, saving the lone break point he faced and converting two of the four break-point opportunities he created.

Sam Querrey kept the Americans in it on Sunday in the first match, stunning Marin Cilic 6-7 (2), 7-6 (6), 6-3, 6-4. "Afterwards I felt Sam served really well in the third and fourth sets".

Querrey had never beaten Cilic in six previous meetings and, for a player whose ranking has fallen from 11th to No. 61 this year, it was an exceptional result.

Croatia secured their place in the Davis Cup final with a 3-2 victory over the U.S. in Zadar.

France took an unassailable 3-0 semi-final lead over Spain earlier on Saturday to secure a 19th final appearance.

The meaningless last singles rubber, between Dennis Novak and Jordan Thompson, was canceled.
