FEMA Administrator Brock Long's travel subject of inspector general investigation

Neither FEMA nor the inspector general's office of DHS immediately responded to Newsweek's inquiry about the possible misuse of government vehicles and taxpayer money. The investigation includes, but may not be limited to, travel using government resources, and that would include the administrator's travel in government vehicles on the taxpayer's dime, the source told CNN. He is now overseeing the preparations for Hurricane Florence, which is expected to hit the Southeast hard. Seems Long has taken the 800-mile round-trip drive many times, spending 150 days of weekends and days off in North Carolina since he was hired in 2017.

"If I remember, high tide is going to occur between 11 and 12 p.m. today, so it's only going to get worse as the system continues to file back", said Long.

FEMA Administrator Brock Long speaks during a news conference at the National Hurricane Center as National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham, right, looks on, Wednesday, May 30, 2018, in Miami.

Long reportedly began having a government driver take him home since he took control of FEMA past year.

The actions by Long, the USA government's lead disaster official as the country braces for Hurricane Florence, have been called into question by the inspector general over whether taxpayers have inappropriately footed the bill for his travel, an issue that has tripped up a number of current and former top Trump administration officials. "Doing something unethical is not part of my DNA and it's not part of my track record my whole entire career so we'll work with the OIG", he continued.

Houlton said in a statement that Homeland Security is "fully focused on preparing for, responding to, and recovering from Hurricane Florence and the storms in the Pacific".

Brock Long discussed the investigation, first reported by Politico, at a briefing on Hurricane Florence, saying he would cooperate and own up to any mistakes. Nielsen confronted Long about the issue at a meeting in late August.

At the beginning of his tenure at FEMA a year ago, Long started using a staff driver to get him back home to Hickory, North Carolina, according to Politico.
