Florence: Two patients dead after van swept away in floods

Florence death toll jumps to 31 as flooding wreaks havoc - The Jakarta Post

Water appears to have receded in some areas of the Carolinas, but more flooding from Hurricane Florence could arrive through the weekend, officials say. The deputies climbed on top of the van and were rescued; they have been placed on administrative leave.

Even though Florence was downgraded into a tropical depression, officials say conditions are still unsafe.

"Life expectancy in North Carolina communities near hog CAFOs remains low, even after adjusting for socioeconomic factors that are known to affect people's health and lifespan", senior author H. Kim Lyerly said in a statement.

Traveling with him were the four US senators from North and South Carolina, Office of Management and Budget Director and former South Carolina Rep. Mick Mulvaney, and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

Trump departed 1:15 p.m. on one of two presidential helicopters for SC, along with three Marine helicopters which included the traveling press pools.

Almost 3 feet of rain fell in some parts of North Carolina and almost 2 feet in areas of SC.

President Trump will visit North Carolina on Wednesday to view areas affected by the storm, and Bender said said the president "absolutely" needs to visit Pollocksville and other small towns.

In Lenoir County, North Carolina, where the rising Neuse River has flooded some roads, emergency medical workers have been running a "mobile disaster hospital" to provide urgent care to those residents who were cut off from the nearest hospital.

That would put water levels about 2 feet higher than the river's level just two years ago during Hurricane Matthew.

They are able to survive in flood waters for weeks on end, until waters subside and the ants can return back to dry land.

Authorities have said that 23 out of the 46 counties in SC could potentially be impacted by flooding.

It has been a little more than a year since Hurricane Harvey dumped trillions of gallons of water on Texas and the U.S. Gulf Coast, killing 68 people and causing an estimated $125 billion in property damage.

Global warming has greatly increased the chances of another storm of Harvey's magnitude hitting Texas again, according to a published study by Massachusetts Institute of Technology Professor Kerry Emanuel.

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality listed 110 hog pits at noon Wednesday that have overflowed or remain in danger of doing so, including 21 that have already discharged material. The storm also closed 1,200 North Carolina roads, including 357 primary roads. North Carolina officials have asked residents living along the river, especially those in Brunswick County, to evacuate and move to safer grounds. Duke Energy issued a high-level emergency alert after floodwaters from the Cape Fear River overtopped an earthen dike and inundated a large lake at a closed power plant near Wilmington, North Carolina.
