Florence's dangerous 'flooding is only going to get worse,' officials warn

"This system is unloading epic amounts of rainfall, in some places measured in feet and not inches", North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said on Saturday.

The town is about 40 miles north of hard-hit New Bern, N.C. and 130 miles north of Wilmington, where Hurricane Florence made landfall as a Category 1 storm early Friday morning. Earlier the two states announced evacuation of coastal areas with a population of more than 1.5 million people.

Florence continues to move at a snail's pace causing catastrophic flooding in North and SC, according to the National Weather Service.

Downgraded to a Tropical Storm, its core is now drifting westward over SC, threatening more flash floods and major river flooding. Another person was arrested for allegedly looting an Exxon gas station and convenience store.

About 488,551 customers in North Carolina and 16,385 in SC don't have electricity. In South Carolina, some 36,000 customers are without power, officials said. More than 30 inches were recorded in Swansboro, N.C. The previous record of 24 inches was set in 1999, when Hurricane Floyd pounded the region.

The storm killed at least 11 people in North Carolina, including a mother and child killed by a falling tree, state officials said. The woman called for help, but died of a heart attack because emergency crews were unable to reach her because of trees that had fallen in the road. When they got to the home, the woman was dead, authorities said.

Two more people were killed in Lenoir County, NC.

Most of the rivers in northeast SC and eastern North Carolina are experiencing moderate to major flooding and, in some cases, many continue rising well into next week as floodwaters from the interior flow downstream.

The SC Department of Public Safety says two other people died in Horry County due to Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

Outside groups dig in as allegation roils Kavanaugh nomination
The Post said Ford originally contacted her representative in the House, California Democratic Rep. A positive vote would set up a debate following by a vote in the full Senate.

In South Carolina's Union County, a 61-year-old woman was killed when the vehicle she was driving struck a downed tree, state emergency management spokesman Antonio Diggs said. An elevated risk of landslides is now expected in western North Carolina. Hall says those bridges are in areas that experienced significant flooding after 2016's Hurricane Matthew. Many rivers "are still rising, and are not expected to crest until later today or tomorrow".

Flooding is even anticipated in Charlotte - more than 200 miles inland - as well as Fayetteville and Columbia. Experts say Mangkhut may well end up being the deadlier storm, though Florence could tally a higher insured damage total. Right on the coast, though, Mr. Yando said the flood water definitely can be unsafe. There have been "hundreds of rescues".

Official predict that when the water reaches 26 feet, the barriers will be overwhelmed.

"There's nowhere to get out over here", resident Tonya Moore said Friday.

In North Carolina, fears of what could be the worst flooding in the state's history led officials to order tens of thousands to evacuate, though it wasn't clear how many had fled or even could.

Authorities ordered the immediate evacuation of up to 7,500 people living within a mile of a stretch of the Cape Fear River and the Little River, about 100 miles from the coast.

Members of Onslow County emergency look to see if a passenger was still in a auto that was overtaken by flooding on US Route 17 outside of Jacksonville, North Carolina on September 15, 2018 during Tropical Storm Florence.

West-central Virginia into far eastern West Virginia, north of Roanoke and west of Charlottesville, will see 3 to 6 inches of rainfall, with some isolated areas seeing 8 inches.
