Freeland to head back to Washington for high-level NAFTA negotiations

US and Canadian trade negotiators on Tuesday completed a day of talks on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with reaching a final deal.

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland sounded sanguine on Wednesday as she emerged from negotiations with top US trade negotiator Robert Lighthizer, although she cautioned that no trade deal was done until the last issue was nailed down.

Mulroney said Justin Trudeau phoned him last weekend to discuss the NAFTA situation and the two spoke for an hour. Freeland is scheduled to attend the Liberals' caucus retreat Wednesday in Saskatoon and it's unclear whether she will return to the USA capital late in the week.

The U.S. and Canada are trying to reach an agreement by the end of September that would complete a revamped three-nation deal with Mexico that Congress may consider next year.

USA and Canadian trade representatives are set to meet this week to advance NAFTA negotiations between the two countries.

The in-person, high-level negotiations got back underway as events marking the 17th anniversary of the 2001 attacks took place around the US, including at the Pentagon with Vice President Mike Pence, not far from where the trade meetings are taking place.

Free Trade Agreement, said Tuesday he expects a NAFTA deal can be reached. They are aiming to complete a deal by the end of the month so that Mexico, Canada and the United States can sign an agreement by the end of November.

USA officials say time is running out to reach a deal that the current Congress can vote on.

Canada has encouraged overproduction and flooded export markets for milk proteins used in cheese and yogurt, hurting U.S. dairy farmers, Perdue said in an interview aired on Sunday on C-SPAN television.

"So if we don't find some way to accommodate some of that, then we're not going to have a deal". Freeland said she would meet with Lighthizer when negotiators found issues that needed to be elevated to the ministerial level.

"And one of the things that I think we are accomplishing in this agreement is a better deal for Canadian and USA workers in the auto sector".

US President Donald Trump also said the talks, which both countries intensified in recent weeks, were coming along well.

"I think this is a complicated time for employees.

And the word that continues to block the deal is m-i-l-k, OK?", Kudlow said during an appearance last week on "Varney & Co.", a Fox Business Network show.

The latest talks between Canada and the United States have been intense but constructive, marking a departure from acrimonious tit-for-tat that surrounded past rounds. "That's not who we are", Craft said in prepared remarks.

Experts note that the desire to make a trade deal happen is influenced by upcoming political events, including the USA midterm elections in November, a transition of presidential power in Mexico in December and next year's Canadian election. "He's railed against this thing (NAFTA) and they've been at the negotiating table for now over a year".
