Friday morning committee vote could set up quick Kavanaugh confirmation

Kavanaugh-Ford hearing: A dramatic lesson on gender roles

Trump missed hardly a moment of the proceedings, relying on DVRs to keep up on the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing from his private office on Air Force One as he traveled from NY to Washington, and continued monitoring back at the White House, where Ford's voice echoed from TVs around the building.

Kavanaugh used his opening statement to both attack Democrats who he says are targeting him and refute all of the particulars of the allegations lodged against him. "My responsibility is to tell the truth". The first accuser Christine Ford has also agreed to testify publicly.

"I was underneath one of them while the two laughed", she said.

"

"Mark Judge should be subpoenaed."

".

Before Swirling approached Graham, the South Carolina Republican lamented the scrutiny that Kavanaugh has faced following the allegations.

"Indelible in the hippocampus is the laughter". He mocked Ford's allegations - and several others since - that have accused him of sexual impropriety.

Others said they believed Kavanaugh had been assaulted, but that it had likely been by someone else and that she had simply mistaken their identity.

Republicans are pushing to seat Kavanaugh before the November midterms, when Senate control could fall to the Democrats and a replacement Trump nominee could have even greater difficulty.

"They were laughing with each other", Ford said.

New accuser says she witnessed sexual abuse by Kavanaugh
A third woman Wednesday lodged specific sexual misbehavior allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh . She also said that in 1982, she was a victim of such gang rape, while drugged, with Kavanaugh and Judge "present".

"This is the most unethical sham since I've been in politics", said Senator Lindsey Graham of SC. When it comes to trying to arrive at the accurate recollection of trauma, she said, "there's no study that shows that this setting, in five-minute increments, is the best way to do that".

"And two of my daughters have told me stories that I had never heard before about things that happened to them in high school and hadn't told their parents", he added. After being repeatedly asked about the circumstances of the polygraph test - when she took it, where she took it, who had recommended the tester - Ford's lawyers interjected to say that they had paid for the test, "as is routine".

He made the comments at a news conference in NY a day before Judge Brett Kavanaugh was set to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee amid multiple accusations of sexual misconduct. "You may defeat me in the final vote", he said, "but you'll never get me to quit".

It was Ford's telling the committee she now has two front doors at her home - a decision she said she made because of the lasting trauma of the alleged assault - that convinced Kathleen Pierman, 66, who watched the testimony at home.

Feinstein channeled many of Ford's critics and questioned how, so many years later, she could be sure that Kavanaugh committed the attempted assault.

Meanwhile, as veteran sex crimes prosecutor Rachel Mitchell served as a stand-in for the 11 male Republican senators on the committee and questioned Ford about the details of her allegations and why she came forward, many observers noted that Ford appeared unflustered as Mitchell attempted to poke holes in her story.

Trump's son, Donald Jr., also tweeted his review: "I love Kavanaugh's tone".

Ford was only questioned by Democrats, while Republicans on the committee left the probing up to Mitchell.

Republicans are nonetheless working against a clock to confirm Kavanaugh.
