GOP pushing forward for Kavanaugh, accuser wants 'fairness'

For some teachers Kavanaugh's nomination is a civics lesson for the #MeToo era

Can the Senate Judiciary Committee enlist the FBI to investigate the claims of sexual assault brought by an accuser against Judge Brett Kavanaugh, nominee to the Supreme Court?

Republicans fear if the nomination is delayed any further, it could be endangered by a possible Democratic sweep of the looming congressional midterm elections in seven weeks. But that served to galvanize GOP lawmakers around Kavanaugh, who vehemently denies Ford's allegations, all but ensuring his likely confirmation.

Even though Brett Kavanaugh is still in the middle of a firestorm thanks to Christine Blasey Ford's sexual assault allegations against him, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is apparently quite confident this will not stop the judge's rise to the Supreme Court.

A handful of pivotal senators have yet to disclose how they will ultimately vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation, including Republican Senators Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

After Grassley rebuffed the request for an FBI investigation and President Donald Trump downplayed the notion, Ford's attorney Lisa Banks said on Wednesday that "the rush to a hearing is unnecessary, and contrary to the committee discovering the truth".

Federal Bureau of Investigation officials have said they are not looking into the matter.

Late Thursday, the White House released a letter from Kavanaugh to Grassley in which he said he wants to tell his side in a Monday hearing. The FBI has said it is not investigating, a decision backed by Republicans who have accused Democrats of trying to delay the confirmation process. Kavanaugh has repeatedly denied the allegations. Ford's attorneys raised the possibility of subpoenaing several witnesses including Mark Judge, who she says egged Kavanaugh on during the assault.

Taylor Foy, spokesman for Republicans who control the committee, said in a written statement, "We are happy that Dr. Ford's attorneys are now engaging with the Committee". But he said he wants her to testify, saying, "I really want to see her, to see what she has to say" and that if it takes the Senate a little longer to confirm Kavanaugh, so be it.

President Donald Trump has challenged the woman who has accused his Supreme Court nominee of sexual assault, demanding she provide evidence. Ford initially sent the top Democrat on the panel, Sen.

"We believe that Chrissy has acted bravely by voicing her experience from the past, and we know how hard this is for her. Chrissy is not someone who chooses to be in the spotlight", the letter said. So, it's unclear why the White House is ride or die on Brett Kavanaugh.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a New York Democrat, said at the event: "Someone who is lying does not ask the FBI to investigate their claims".

Having given Ford until 10 a.m. Friday to submit testimony for a scheduled hearing Monday, the Senate Judiciary Committee has yet to say whether it will change the date of that hearing, or accept any of Ford's demands.

Prof Ford, Mr Kavanaugh and the judge's wife have all been receiving threats, as the case becomes increasingly contentious.

Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh leaves his home Wednesday in Chevy Chase, Md.

Trump tweeted Friday that Kavanaugh has an "impeccable reputation" and that Democrats "don't want to know the answers, they just want to destroy and delay".

Without directly referencing Trump Jr., Conway said Ford "should not be insulted, and she should not be ignored".
