Jabari Bird taking break from Celtics after domestic violence charges

Boston Celtics player Jabari Bird appears for his arraignment on domestic violence charges at Brighton Municipal Court

Bird was held on $50,000 bail at his arraignment Thursday on domestic violence-related charges. After that, they said, he "began strangling her with two hands, approximately a dozen times".

The police report from the incident says Bird threw the woman against a wall and continued the attack for roughly four hours.

Per The Athletic's Shams Charania, the incident involving the 24-year-old Bird, who is facing multiple charges for the incident and was reportedly on suicide watch during his hospital stay over the weekend, will be investigated by the National Basketball Association.

The ordeal, sparked by what the woman called "trust issues, ' went on for several hours, she said, until Bird experienced 'seizure-like" symptoms and fell.

In a statement Thursday, Bird apologized to his teammates and fans for creating an "unnecessary distraction" and said he's taking time away to deal with "legal and medical issues".

According to Boston Celtics beat reporter Tom Westerholm, Bird's release will be pending conditions, including no drugs or alcohol, no weapons, and court-ordered supervision.

Bird to be freed on $100,000 bail The alleged victim told police that Bird struggles with anxiety issues.

The Celtics released a statement after the arraignment, saying the "organization deplores domestic violence of any kind" and offering no further comment.

Bird's lawyer, former federal prosecutor Brian Kelly, said his client "understands the seriousness of the allegations" but said there are two sides to the story.

The Celtics said in their statement that, per the NBA's policy on domestic violence, "matters of this kind" are handled by the league.

He apologized to his family, the Celtics, his teammates, fans and the National Basketball Association "for the unnecessary distraction that I have caused". "I am hopeful that in due time and process, I will be able to regain everyone's trust". She also reported that he texted her after she escaped stating that if she didn't return to his apartment he would kill himself.

Boston drafted Bird in the second round of the 2017 NBA Draft. A Summer League standout this past July, Bird recently signed a two-year contract, which featured a fully guaranteed contract for the 2018-19 season, with the Celtics to round out their National Basketball Association roster. He played in 13 games during his rookie season, averaging 3.3 points over 8.8 minutes per game.
