Manhunt underway after jogger stabbed to death in 'random' attack, police say

Wendy K. Martinez

Police have identified the suspect accused of murdering 35-year-old Wendy Martinez, who was stabbed while jogging in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday evening.

"Defendant stated however that the detectives were accusing him of stabbing an individual in the court of the homicide, and in specific a 'little girl, '" said the document, which was signed by DC Police Officer Alexander Vogel.

Wendy Martinez's fiance, Daniel Hincapie, also appeared at the vigil, speaking directly to her. It was also captured on a nearby surveillance camera. It was an "unprovoked attack" and there is no information to suggest that it was a robbery.

DC Chief of Police Peter Newsham described the neighborhood as "very safe" and told reporters the killing "is more likely a random act than anything else but we're going to look at all possibilities". "So it was a combination of efforts by the community, by the police, that we were able to get this guy relatively quick".

According to Fox 5, Anthony Crawford has a criminal history and did not know Wendy Martinez before the attack.

She was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead. She lived close to where the stabbing happened, Newsham said. She says that because of her Christian faith and the outpouring of support from the community, she feels no hatred for Wendy's killer. While some ran away from the horrific scene, other patrons rushed to her side. Police say that Crawford is not homeless and that he did not previously know Martinez. "It's very unlikely that this occurred here at the intersection", Chief Newsham said.

While Crawford has a criminal record, police say there is no indication of violence in his past at this time. After D.C. police put out video to the public of the suspect, two people, including a police officer, came forward with a name.
