Maurizio Sarri happy to bring John Terry 'home' to Chelsea as coach

Jamie Vardy got off the mark against Manchester United in Gameweek 1

Maurizio Sarri has opened the door for Chelsea legend John Terry to return to the club as part of the coaching setup, report the Guardian.

At 37-years-old, retirement could be on the horizon, but he doesn't appear to be done just yet.

As reported by Chelsea's official website, Luiz said: "First of all he's a great person, great as a human".

"He wants to play with the ball, he wants to play with intensity, to work on the details and to give us all the information he can about the next game and the opponent".

John Terry is Chelsea's most successful captain, leading the Blues to 14 major trophies. One year later, he left the Villans and was on the verge of joining Olympiacos.

The former England centre-back rejected a move to Spartak Moscow this week, citing family reasons.

Terry enjoyed his first summer break since childhood, but trained on a daily basis.

"I was training every day".

"I was really disappointed they didn't even come back to me".

"The last time I have spoken with him, he told me that he wants to play for another season", Sarri said. He has won everything with the club, so it's up to him. "I spoke to Eddie Newton (Chelsea's loan player technical coach) about it, but he ended up at Aston Villa", he told the Evening Standard.

"If he wants to help us, I'm very, very happy".

Chelsea return to domestic action against Cardiff City on Saturday, and Sarri expects a tough game for his returning players.

"At the moment, I can answer Manchester City or Liverpool [are the contenders], he said".

"We need another step to be at the same level".

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is a doubt for the game with an injury, while Emerson and Davide Zappacosta are also unlikely to feature.

But the defender, who can also play in midfield, thrived as Wales thrashed Republic of Ireland 4-1 in the Nations League during the global break.
