Misleading Florence headlines suggest ‘MYRTLE BEACH COULD GET CUT OFF’

There have been seven storm-related deaths since Florence, then a Category-1 hurricane, made landfall Friday morning. It has since been downgraded to a tropical storm, but is not going anywhere fast.

Florence will continue to move very slowly to the southwest on Saturday, which in turn will drag the axis of heavy rain bands to the southwest as well.

The White House announced that President Donald Trump has issued a disaster declaration for North Carolina, which will make federal money available to people in the counties of Beaufort, Brunswick, Carteret, Craven, New Hanover, Onslow, Pamlico, and Pender.

Florence flattened trees, damaged buildings and crumpled roads. Rescue workers were able only to save her father.

In Morehead City, Brooke Kittrell rode out the storm Thursday and Friday with her boyfriend aboard their docked boat, hoping it didn't break loose and slam something. In Wilmington, high winds blew transformers, plunging the city into darkness.

Sometime after the rescue, the group knelt outside the home and prayed.

Forecasters say Florence is now a tropical storm but will continue to threaten North and SC with powerful winds and catastrophic freshwater flooding.

"We've got a massive amount of cleanup to do", Saffo said.

Early Saturday morning Florence's winds weakened to 65 mph (100 kph) as it moved forward at 5 mph (7 kph) and was about 15 miles (25 kilometers) west northwest of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Most of the rivers in northeast SC and eastern North Carolina are experiencing moderate to major flooding and, in some cases, many continue rising well into next week as floodwaters from the interior flow downstream.

At the time, the storm carried winds of about 90 miles per hour (145 km/h), making it a Category 1 storm, but that ranking belies the hurricane's massive clouds and the downpour it is visiting on the coastline, with some areas already drenched in 30 inches (76 centimeters) of rain.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper called Florence an "uninvited brute" that could wipe out entire communities as it grinds across the state.

In Wilmington, numerous trees that contributed to its historic beauty are now gone.

Videos posted to social media show storm surges flooding into homes as they race inland.

While Florence may be gone by Saturday, she will not be forgotten.

Forecasters say the combination of a life-threatening storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline.

Downed trees and long-lasting power outages are also expected, with utility companies predicting it could take weeks for power to be restored.

Authorities fear the death toll will go higher as the tropical storm crawls westwards across SC.

Florence's fatality count rose to seven on September 15, as the storm continued hammering the Carolinas and surrounding states.

The NWS says southern and central portions of North Carolina into far northeast SC are expected to report an additional 10 to 15 inches of rainfall - with storm totals between 30 and 40 inches along the coastal areas south of Cape Hatteras.

The storm is expected to bring historic and "catastrophic" rain and flooding, the National Hurricane Center said in an 8 a.m. briefing.
