'Monster' Hurricane Florence Barrels Toward the Carolinas

Carolinas brace for Hurricane Florence which is going to be a 'Mike Tyson punch' to the coast FEMA official warns

Florence is so wide that a life-threatening storm surge was being pushed 300 miles ahead of its eye, and so wet that a swath from SC to OH and Pennsylvania could get deluged.

Greg Postel, hurricane and storm specialist for The Weather Channel.

A flawless storm of unfortunate circumstances means Florence will likely be catastrophic for parts of the Southeast.

Described as a monster, the eye of Hurricane Florence continues to grow.

As of Tuesday, more than 1.7 million people in the Carolinas and Virginia were warned to clear out.

Aides say Trump has been monitoring the massive storm from the White House, and he has taken to Twitter to encourage those in its path to listen to their local authorities for how best to remain safe.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Florence was hurling 125-mph winds as a Category 3 hurricane.

Forecasters anxious the storm's damage will be all the worse if it lingers on the coast.

Around the same time Florence makes landfall, the steering winds pushing it forward will die down.

The hurricane will eventually stall over over the East Coast. Some fluctuations in strength will be possible through Thursday morning.

While the storm's maximum sustained winds edged lower on Wednesday, those of tropical-storm-force expanded outward, extending 195 miles and putting more people at risk when the storm finally comes ashore, expected near the border separating the Carolinas.

This kind of long-term attack portends severe destruction. Unsure of what they would find when they return home, the couple went shopping for a recreational vehicle. So will the trees. Electricity remained out for much of the city, known for its historic mansions, with power lines lying across roads like wet strands of spaghetti.

But astonishing winds aren't the biggest danger.

As soon as Deal made the declaration, Coweta County Emergency Management Agency director Jay Jones said he sprang into action. The storm's impact could be felt in Ireland and Britain next week. It's enough to cover Manhattan with almost 3,800 feet (1.1 kilometers) of water, more than twice as high as the island's tallest building. And that's without taking storm surge into account. In Myrtle Beach, S.C., and nearby areas, the surge could hit 6-9 feet.

Fuctuations in strength are expected through Thursday, and the hurricane is still expected to be "an extremely unsafe major hurricane when it nears" the US coast late Thursday and Friday, the hurricane center told CNN.

Meteorologists are warning of potentially catastrophic flooding in the area, with isolated amounts of up to 40 inches of rain expected in parts of SC.

The storm is expected to stall once it makes landfall in the Carolinas, and if does, restoration efforts can not begin until it passes and in some cases until flood waters recede.

A NHS forecaster said: "This will likely be the storm of a lifetime for portions of the Carolina coast".

If the storm track brings the center of circulation closer to Georgia, we could see some of that heavy rain as well, particularly in the northeastern mountains where slopes are particularly steep and rainfall amounts will be increased by the mountainous terrain. "Now the coast, all threats are on, but for the Charlotte area, the threat is increasing for flooding rain". Three college football games with Top 25 teams have been called off: East Carolina at No. 11 Virginia Tech, No. 15 West Virginia at NC State and No. 18 Central Florida at North Carolina. So the land can't absorb much more water. Cars and trucks full of people and belongings streamed inland.

As the day progresses we'll see partly cloudy skies with a slight chance for a shower or storm.

And in the 29 years since Hurricane Hugo struck, the population of the coastal Carolinas has skyrocketed. The track continues to having it make landfall anywhere from SC to portions of Virginia. This is a very wide storm, so its effect will be felt by many.
