Liberia ended up on the wrong end of a 2-1 defeat - this all coming on the very same night that Weah's 18-year-old son, Timothy, started for the United States of America in their game against Mexico in Nashville.

George Weah, President of Liberia and former World Footballer of the Year, made a surprise return to worldwide football in Monrovia on Tuesday, playing for 79 minutes in a 2-1 friendly loss to Nigeria a few weeks short of his 52nd birthday.

In his playing days, Weah was an inspiration to young Africans who watched the Liberian in the colours of AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain or even in his twilight at Chelsea.

Weah played for 80 minutes before going off as Liberia lost 2-1 to Nigeria in Monrovia on Tuesday, September 11.

Weah, a former world footballer of the year and African footballer of the year, said that Nigerian football had always inspired him.

The game, which was played in Monrovia, ended as a 2-1 win for the Super Eagles with Nigerian goals from Henry Onyekuru and Simeon Nwankwo before the home team scored in a penalty taken by Kpah Sherman. I looked up to the likes of Stephen Keshi, Rashidi Yekini, Friday Ekpo and others.

After the game, Liberian football authorities retired jersey number 14, which was worn by Weah during his footballing peak.

In the encounter, two Nigerians scored their first global goals - Henry Onyekuru and Simeon Nwankwo - and a third - John Ogu - was named captain for the first time - a tremendous occasion for the trio - but sadly, they recorded the feat against a 51-year-old retired footballer turned Politician.

Former Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille star Weah is not expected to continue his global career beyond this match.
