'Rat Fever' Cases Rise After Kerala Floods,12 Dead Since August 1 | Read

The Kerala government is preparing to revamp its healthcare system as people start returning home from flood relief camps

Rat fever has claimed at least 10 lives in flood-ravaged Kerala, prompting the government to appeal to citizens to avoid self-medication and rush to the nearest hospital as soon as symptoms are noticed.

The three died of suspected rat fever are Prakashan (43) of Puthanur, Ezhakkad, Mundur, who died in Coimbatore Medical College; Nirmala (50), daughter of Kuttan and Janu of Chempakkara, Ezhakkad of Mundur.

Commenting on the health crises in state Health Minister K K Shailaja has assured that there is no need to panic as remedial measures have been in implementation.

Leptospirosis, or rat fever, transmits from animals to humans and the risk of getting it is high during floods.

The two deceased in Kozhikode district were Anil, 54, of Eranjikal and Narayani, 80, of Vadakara. They have been identified as Ranju from Ranni in Idukki and Anil Kumar from Kozhikode.

Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala and former chief minister Oommen Chandy also took part in a drive organised by Kerala PCC in Alappuzha, one of the worst flood affected areas.
