SA officially free of listeriosis

FILE Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi

Health Minister Aaron Mostoaledi says factories across the country can now produce cold meat products as the listeria outbreak is officially over.

Listeriosis cases have been recorded for 40 years in South Africa. They will be finished somewhere around the middle of October and then we will go and test and make a new announcement.

Health officials announced in March that they had traced the outbreak to an Enterprise Food plant, 300 kilometres (185 miles) northeast of Pretoria, and immediately ordered a nationwide recall of affected processed meat products. The vast majority were caused by the ST6 strain of listeria‚ which was found in Tiger Brands Polokwane's processed meat factory.

According to the South African National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), there are between 60 and 80 cases of listeriosis in the country for the past five years.

WHO, along with global and local food safety experts agree that no new listeriosis cases have been identified since the first week of June 2018.

When (if?) the 26-year-old returns to the team this season, it will be interesting to see how everyone gets along. Here's a guy who doesn't give a damn , I guess so we'll just treat it as such. "I just hate it came to this".

On 4 March earlier this year, the Minister convened an urgent press briefing that ended up recalling all ready-to-eat processed meat products produced by Enterprise Foods and Rainbow Foods where listeria was identified.

"We should be mindful of the fact that the listeriosis outbreak should have never happened in the first place", Fawu said.

The Enterprise factory in Polokwane is not open for production.

Symptoms from the food-borne disease include diarrhea, fever, general body pains, vomiting and weakness.

Approximately 900 environmental health practitioners in every South African health district was re-trained in factory inspections, food safety systems, and Listeria testing within food facilities. This ongoing process is expected to continue into September 2018.
