Tennis Umpires Mulling Boycott Of Serena Williams Matches

Tennis Umpires Are Reportedly Considering Boycott of Serena Williams Matches After US Open Incident

If it was wrong, it should prompt a discussion about what needs to be changed in either the rules or the interpretation of the rules to reduce officiating errors. There are more eyeballs and ears around what we want to say. We are now hyper-aware of the injustices and inequities of the world, of which sport isn't immune.

For a prime example of this muddying of the Gatorade, look no further than Serena Williams.

Barbora Strycova, who is ranked #25 in the world, spoke with Czech website Sport.CZ about Williams claiming both during and after the match that chair umpire Carlos Ramos had displayed sexism when he hit her with three code violations leading to a game penalty. But, of course, it was what happened during the match that sparked controversy, turning Osaka's first grand slam win into an nearly week-long debate, sprouting agita from all sides.

Ramos is back in the umpire's chair this weekend when Croatia host the United States in a Davis Cup tie in Zadar and U.S. captain Jim Courier said of the Williams incident: "It's been polarized and in some ways politicized. This is evidence of people just not being willing to call out the truth, which is Serena cheated and got caught".

"I'm just focusing on this tie and working again". American Serena Williams and Japan's Naomi Osaka were competing in the championship.

Ramos was unperturbed, and Williams' rage continued: she was soon given a point penalty for smashing and making bits of her racket.

After the match, Williams accused Ramos of having a double standard for women and men.

"I feel it's really important to stand up for what you believe in, ' Serena said in reference to the U.S. Open incident". It made me feel like it was a sexist remark. Osaka, who became the first-ever Japanese-born Grand Slam victor, said she was crying when she heard the boos, because she thought they were aimed at her. For me, it blows my mind. Even though she spends a lot of her time away from Japan, Osaka is proud of her mixed-race heritage and representing her country through tennis. Everyone who has experienced discrimination can empathise with her passionate plea. If Williams wanted to address the issue of her integrity and/or sexism in tennis, an outburst in the middle of a public match probably wasn't the best choice of venue.

Strycova was also surprised that the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) and United States Tennis Association (USTA) later came out in support of Williams.

Osaka earned your votes for the month of August after a sizzling two weeks in NY, where she became the first player, male or female, from Japan to win a Grand Slam singles title. It is inconceivable that while her coach admits to default, she is nonchalant. She called him a thief and a liar.

No prizes for guessing who won...

Those figures, obtained by The New York Times, show that from 1998 to 2018 at the four Grand Slam events, men have been fined for misbehavior with much more frequency than women with one significant exception: coaching violations.
