Two people die after attending Sydney's Defqon.1 festival

Two dead after Defqon.1 music festival

A trial at a major Australian music festival in 2016 found two in three people wouldn't consume a pill if a test showed it contained methamphetamine.

Around 700 people sought medical attention from paramedics at the Sydney International Regatta Centre during the festival. Another man is in a critical condition at Liverpool hospital.

"I'm absolutely aghast at what's occurred [and] I don't want any family to have to go through the tragedy that some families are waking up to this morning - it's just terrible to think about".

A 23-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman died on Saturday after collapsing at the Defqon.

"Gladys Berejiklian would rather shut down entire music festivals, such as Defqon.1, rather than introduce pill testing which would actually save lives", said Greg Ducayne on Twitter. "I don't want to see this ever happen again -young lives lost for no reason".

In 2015, a 26-year-old man died while attending the festival and in 2013 a 23-year-old man died, both of suspected drug overdose. "Clearly it wasn't when so many people have succumbed".

A 19-year-old man was airlifted from the event in a critical condition and is in intensive care at Westmead Hospital. "What we can't do is be in people's heads, be in people's decision-making processes when they decide to take illicit drugs", said Assistant Police Commissioner Allan Sicard.

Drug testers said they found the "absolutely lethal" N-Ethylpentylone (ephylone) which is responsible for deaths around the world.

Taking Baby Aspirin Every Day Can Actually Have Serious Health Risks
However the medicine was linked with an increased risk of serious bleeding, in line with previous findings. Other large aspirin studies have suggested that aspirin may prevent cancer over the longer term.

"How many funerals do we have to go to of people that have taken these substances and found out they're not what they're sold?" asked Liberal backbencher Warren Entsch during an interview with ABC Radio in May.

"We are disappointed at the number of reported drug-related incidents, we have a zero-tolerance policy in relation to drug use at the festival", Defqon.

Festival organisers are working closely and cooperating with the authorities regarding the fatalities and the number of medical presentations made during the evening, a full investigation is now underway, the statement continued.

Strike Force Highworth has been formed to investigate the deaths of the two young people.

He also said it was too early to say whether the same drug was responsible for the deaths and hospitalisations, but said toxicology reports were being fast-tracked and should be ready later this week.

The organizers of the dance, trance and techno annual music festival, held in Australia since 2009, say on their website that the festival has a zero-tolerance policy on illegal drugs.

"This means that all types of soft- and hard drugs are prohibited".
