Windows 10 Test Halts Competing Browser Installs, Suggests Edge Instead

Windows 10 warning for Google Chrome

As Ghacks reports, triggering the installation of Firefox or Chrome will see a screen pop up reminding users that Microsoft Edge is already available to use. It's clear Microsoft doesn't know, because it's resorted to using annoying pop-up warnings when users try to install another browser. At least Microsoft gives you the option to turn off warnings like this, but that doesn't make the situation much better. The company recently announced the new iteration of Windows 10 will arrive duly under the name "Windows 10 October 2018 update" in October. So, even though you are alerted about Microsoft Edge being the "safer, faster browser for Windows 10", when searching for Firefox or Chrome, this message is again shoved in your face when proceeding to run the installer. Clicking "Install anyway" installs the "other browsers" without issues. So Microsoft trying to force users to use Edge here really doesn't do anything - it's just another irritating dialog you have to ignore in order to not use Edge, basically.

The fact that his app recommendation feature is default might be irritating for some users, as they've long already decided they don't want anything to do with the Windows 10 default browser.

There is also a chance that Microsoft would push its own products when users attempt to install other products: think a third-party media player, screenshot tool, image editor, or text editor.

It shows you the problem: Microsoft added a new "Show me app recommendations" feature, which is enabled by default.

Imagine a constant storm of warnings telling you not to install the software you want or need.

Overall Edge was behind Chrome in two out of three benchmarks, significantly in the case of Ares-6, but also beat Firefox in two out of three benchmarks. It's particularly bold for Microsoft to surface this pop-up as soon as you try to launch the installer for another browser as well, and we can't really see its existence sitting well with the larger Windows 10 userbase.

In fact, it was hard to tell any difference between the speed of the three major browsers when using an advert- and script-heavy site site, with each browser being fast to load pages.
