Apple denies explosive report of Chinese hacking on its servers

Cool Tech Chinese Spy Chips Infiltrated Apple And Amazon Says Bloomberg. Nonsense Say Apple and Amazon

In what's being called a major supply chain attack, Chinese spies used microchips "not much bigger than a grain of rice" to infiltrate almost 30 U.S. companies, including Amazon and Apple, according to a new Bloomberg report.

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the country is a "resolute defender of cybersecurity", and while "supply chain safety in cyberspace is an issue of common concern [.] China is also a victim".

Bloomberg claims that the chips were initially and independently discovered by Apple and Amazon in 2015 and that the companies reported their findings to the FBI, prompting an investigation that remains ongoing.

The purportedly compromised hardware was purchased from California-based Super Micro Computer, with Bloomberg claiming that the chips were developed by a specialized computer hardware attack unit in the People's Liberation Army, thus giving China unfettered backdoor access to data.

Amazon reported the discovery to U.S. authorities, according to Bloomberg, which reports that the findings "sent a shudder through the intelligence community" as Elemental's services were also used by the Department of Defense, the CIA's drone operations, and the onboard networks of Navy warships.

Apple, however, says the report is bogus.

In its lengthy statement, Amazon said: "We've found no evidence to support claims of malicious chips or hardware modifications".

Vikings’ Cousins has another 400-yard game but no win
Minnesota cut the deficit to 38-31 with three minutes, 46 seconds left in the fourth quarter on Dan Bailey's 40-yard field goal. The Vikings trimmed LA's lead to 31-28 late in the third quarter with Adam Thielen's 45-yard TD catch and a 2-point conversion.

A closer examination of the servers revealed a tiny chip embedded on the motherboard, which wasn't included in the original design.

The attack was reportedly uncovered following Amazon Web Services' (AWS) $500m September 2015 acquisition video encoding startup Elemental Technologies.

In response to the discovery, Apple is reported to have scrapped some 7,000 Super Micro servers in its data centers, and Amazon sold off a Chinese data center. "We are not aware of any investigation by the FBI, nor are our contacts in law enforcement".

Apple and Amazon have distanced themselves from claims that they were among United States companies targeted by the Chinese hackers. "It's also untrue that AWS knew about servers containing malicious chips or modifications in data centers based in China, or that AWS worked with the FBI to investigate or provide data about malicious hardware". "Apple never had any contact with the Federal Bureau of Investigation or any other agency about such an incident".

The company instead suggested that Bloomberg's sources may have been mistaking an incident in 2016 when an accidental vulnerability was found on a single Super Micro server inside the company.

Microchips were secretly inserted by Chinese spies in Supermicro motherboards found in the United States government and some of the biggest tech companies.

However, Bloomberg claimed its reportage was based on interviews with 17 people, including six current and former senior national security officials, two people inside Amazon Web Services, and three Apple insiders.
