Bloomberg goes back home - to the Democrats

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire former New York City mayor and potential 2020 presidential candidate, announced Wednesday that he re-registered as a Democrat, saying the party must "provide the checks and balances our nation needs so badly".

Bloomberg said via Instagram, "At key points in USA history, one of the two parties has served as a bulwark against those who threaten our Constitution".

Bloomberg, who served as Mayor of NY for three terms, has had a variety of party affiliations throughout the years.

Bloomberg, who was NY mayor from 2002 to 2013, was elected to the position as a registered Republican before switching to an independent in 2007.

Bloomberg has used his fortune, which Forbes magazine has pegged at $51.8 billion, to push a number of liberal causes including efforts to tackle global warming and gun deaths.

Senate Confirms 15 More Judges, Wrapping Up a GOP Priority
McConnell says Republicans learned that lesson when they launched impeachment proceedings against Bill Clinton in 1998. He was then asked how it will affect his ability to get things done if Democrats were to win the House.

In June, Bloomberg reportedly said at a fundraiser that he's "revving up" for 2020.

Bloomberg, the founder of the financial data and media company that bears his name, has said he will decide in the wake of the November 6 midterm elections whether he will make a run for the White House.

In 2007, he left the Republican Party and declared himself a registered independent or unaffiliated voter as the party swung to the right. He had been a longtime Democrat before registering in 2001 as a Republican ahead of his first NY mayoral run. "Two years ago at the Democratic Convention, I warned of those threats", his post read. "You got my vote if you run for president, we need someone like you!" another person wrote.

The idea now, of course, is that Bloomberg will run for president in 2020, and that he'll do so as a Democrat. According to the New York Times, he's approved allocating at least $80 million, with the bulk supporting the Democratic campaign to take control of the U.S. House.
