British couple killed as their taxi is swept away in Mallorca floods

People clear debris as heavy rain and flash floods hit Sant Llorenc de Cardassar on the island of Mallorca

World No.1 tennis player Rafael Nadal has helped in the clean-up after a deadly devastating flood hit his native island of Majorca.

At least 10 people including two Britons were killed as heavy rain and flash floods hit the Spanish island of Mallorca, authorities said on Wednesday.

Authorities on the popular tourist island said 10 people, three of them foreigners, died after torrential rain deluged the region around the town of Sant Llorenc, about 40 miles east of the capital, Palma.

A spokeswoman with the regional emergency service said two British nationals and a Dutch woman were among the victims, but she couldn't confirm whether six more people were still missing at midday as local media reported.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: 'We are supporting the family of two British people following their deaths in Spain, and will do all we can to assist them at this deeply hard time.

Authorities said 80 soldiers and seven vehicles from the military's emergency unit had joined more than 100 rescuers deployed in the area on Wednesday.

Videos shot on mobile phones by local residents showed a strong current of water and mud that buried cars and tore trees on its way down the streets of the town of 8,000.

Spain's weather agency said up to 22 centimeters (8.7 inches) of rain fell within four hours, triggering flash floods in the island.

Sanchez was planning to travel to the area later on Wednesday, his office said.

The Spanish parliament held a tribute to the victims in the form of a minute's silence.

Spain's meteorological office warned that rainfall and storms were set to get worse in the archipelago "in the coming hours".
