Caravan migrants turn back at Mexico border

Trump threatens to use military to close Mexican border as migrant caravan approaches

And what will happen if they do?

The news comes as families entering the United States illegally have reached a record high, prompting a demand from President Donald Trump that Central American countries and Mexico take steps to correct the situation immediately.

On Thursday, hundreds had walked to the river's edge where they sang the national anthems of Honduras and Guatemala.

There are thousands of people in the largest group.

Mexico says the migrants will be processed and that those without a legitimate case to travel onwards or stay in Mexico will be returned to their countries of origin.

Mr Trump had earlier this week threatened to withhold aid to the region as a caravan with several thousand Honduran migrants travelled through Guatemala to Mexico in the hope of crossing into the United States to escape violence and poverty.

Migrant caravans of this type are nothing new, they quite often take place.

Back on the bridge, police eventually regained order, but the migrants' mission north continues. In fact, the number of family units crossing the southern border reportedly spiked in September, just months after the Trump Administration ended a policy of separating children from their parents at the border.

As the mass of humanity strung out from Guatemala City to the border, it was unclear whether those who made it the farthest would wait for their countrymen to arrive before attempting a mass crossing into Mexico. Those who do so will be held "at a migratory station" for up to 45 business days.

Officials in Mexico said anyone in the Honduran caravan who had proper documents could enter the country.

Some hope to eventually enter the United States to escape violence and poverty.

Multiple migrants, federal police and journalists were wounded as the crowd hurled rocks and other objects at the security cordon on the Mexican side, an AFP correspondent said.

Beyond that, this situation catches Mexico at a unusual time.

If Trump pulls out of the trade deal or closes the border, there would be major economic implications for both countries. Their objective now is to regroup and press on towards the border with Mexico.

The members of the group tried to form an orderly line to the Mexico border, Weir reported.

It's also about Mexican emigrants living overseas, many of whom are undocumented.

Late on Thursday, Trump retweeted a video of Mexican federal police arriving at the Guatemalan border and wrote: "Thank you Mexico, we look forward to working with you!"

Like Guatemala and Honduras, Mexico is a country of many migrants, raising the question of whether the political will exists for a confrontation. So that makes any worldwide policy negotiations tricky.

Lopez Obrador, who takes office in December, said in the northern city of Saltillo on Thursday that he believed "an agreement can be reached" on the migration issue.

"A caravan of Central American migrants is making its way north", Judicial Watch warned in a statement Friday.

"Honestly, I want to get to the states to contribute to that country, to do any kind of work, picking up garbage", he said.

"We are going to the United States!" he shouted euphorically.
