Chinese state councilor meets U.S. state secretary, calling for win-win cooperation

Secretary of State Pompeo meets with Kim Jong Un in North Korea

The visit was the latest indication of deteriorating ties between the US and China, as the two sides tussle over everything from trade to Taiwan and the South China Sea.

Kim made a commitment to allow inspectors into both sites when he met South Korean President Moon Jae-in last month, but experts said it was important to have him explicitly reiterate that promise to Pompeo.

KCNA said: "Together with Mike Pompeo, Kim Jong-un appreciated the positively developing situation on the Korean peninsula, explained in detail the proposals for solving the denuclearisation issue and matter of concern of both sides and exchanged constructive opinions".

"On the issues that you characterized, we have fundamental disagreements..."

Secretary of State Michael Pompeo flew to Asia to shore up a weakening sanctions regime on North Korea, nail down a date for a future summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un and assuage Chinese officials days after Vice President Mike Pence lambasted their country. Chairman Kim said he's ready to allow them to come in.

"North Korea summit, Chairman Kim Jong Un's visit to Russian Federation and President Xi Jinping's visit to North Korea are expected to take place soon", Moon told a cabinet meeting.

Recently the United States escalated its trade friction with China, took actions that jeopardized China's rights and interests on the Taiwan issue and unwarrantedly condemned China on its domestic and foreign policies, Wang said.

Pompeo said he's "hopeful" worldwide inspectors would soon be allowed on select sites associated with North Korea's missile and nuclear program, and didn't comment on Pyongyang's insistence that inspectors would be allowed into the Yongbyon site only if the USA took corresponding measures.

But the senior US official said the United States still expected cooperation with Beijing on efforts to denuclearize North Korea, whose chief ally is China. A second summit in the coming weeks could boost Trump ahead of US midterm elections in November, but a failure to secure any measurable commitments would undercut what the president has seen so far as a clear foreign policy strength.

While China's foreign ministry said at a news briefing Monday that broader tensions wouldn't undermine cooperation on North Korea, Wang told Pompeo that the issue illustrated the importance of maintaining a working relationship.

Pompeo told journalists in Seoul that the leader had agreed to open up the Punggye-ri nuclear testing site to inspectors. Trump said on Twitter that, "Progress made on Singapore Summit Agreements!"

While Mr Kim's actions since have fallen short of Washington's demands, the Trump administration is preparing for a second summit.

But once he arrived in Beijing, the agenda swiftly pivoted to the burgeoning acrimony between the world's two biggest economies, sparked by US President Trump's trade war and fuelled by his allegations that the Chinese government is "meddling" in next month's mid-term elections.

The Vatican did not comment on the possibility of a papal visit.
