Donald Trump 'very proud' of Senate for advancing Kavanaugh nomination

US Senate: Don't Approve Kavanaugh Nomination

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh acknowledged Thursday he "might have been too emotional" when testifying about sexual misconduct allegations as he made a final bid to win over wavering GOP senators on the eve of a crucial vote to advance his confirmation.

Most Democrats opposed Trump's nomination of Kavanaugh from the outset.

There was another protest in front of Trump Tower in New York City.

A former Supreme Court Justice even came out against Kavanaugh's confirmation, leading Kavanaugh to write a rare Wall Street Journal op-ed defending his independence and impartiality.

A final Senate vote is set for Saturday. Kavanaugh denied the allegation in testimony following Ford's, painting himself as the victim of a "political hit".

Christine Blasey Ford charged that Mark Judge, Kavanaugh's friend from Georgetown Prep, was in the room when she claims Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed, groped her and covered her mouth when she screamed during a high school party in the 1980s.

As the U.S. Senate is expected to make its vote on Brett Kavanaugh, the judge spoke out for the first time following last week's hearing. A hefty police presence added an air of anxiety, as did thousands of noisy anti-Kavanaugh demonstrators who gathered outside the Supreme Court and in Senate office buildings.

Confirmation would hand Trump a clear victory and tip the balance on the court to a 5-4 majority in favor of conservatives in possible legal battles ahead over contentious issues such as abortion rights, immigration, and Trump's attempt to ban transgender people from the USA military.

It's up to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to determine when to hold the vote, according to Senate rules and whenever he thinks he has the votes.

Trump joins other first ladies - including Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama - in embarking on solo trips to Africa. A white woman on the roadside held up a handmade sign as the first lady's motorcade passed that said "Melania Me Too".

Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., who's repeatedly battled Trump and will retire in January, said he'd vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation "unless something big changes". "I'm grateful to the FBI for their efforts in doing a thorough, very important investigation". Joe Manchin of West Virginia told reporters he still had not decided. Lisa Murkowski voted against moving forward with Kavanaugh, and soon announced he was a "good man" but perhaps "not the right man for the court" at this time.

Democrats have sought to block Kavanaugh's confirmation since soon after Trump nominated him in July.

Earlier on Friday, Senate lawmakers backed Kavanaugh, a federal appeals court judge, by 51 to 49 in a procedural vote that moved the Republican-controlled Senate towards a definitive decision. Two other women also emerged and accused him of other incidents of sexual misconduct. They skirted reporters for much of the day, sometimes shielded by Capitol Police. The Judiciary panel's 10 Democrats said in a statement that based on their briefing and study of the document, "That is not true". "There's also no contemporaneous evidence".

Neither side specified what they were referring to.

But only USA senators and a handful of others were granted access to the report, which is confidential.

"It wasn't an investigation, it was nine interviews", Rep. Cheri Bustos (D., Ill.) said on Thursday afternoon. Trump mocked Ford on Tuesday during a political rally in MS, further angering Democrats and women campaigning for an end to sexual violence. They weren't allowed to disclose any of its contents. They were hoping to sway the small group of undecided lawmakers.

The top Senate Judiciary Democrat, Dianne Feinstein, said the report appeared insufficient to lay to rest concerns about Kavanaugh.

Democratic leaders said the report, which was withheld from the public and was made available in a single copy to senators yesterday, was "incomplete". But he said he will because he considers Kavanaugh a "qualified jurist who will follow the Constitution".
