Erdogan adviser Aktay says missing Saudi journalist killed in Istanbul consulate

Turkey believes journalist killed in Saudi consulate

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saudi officials need to prove that Khashoggi left the building after arriving last Tuesday to get a document for his upcoming marriage.

But other Turkish officials have said they believe that Khashoggi was killed by Saudi agents inside the consulate.

The former government adviser, who turns 60 on October 13, has lived in self-imposed exile in the United States since a year ago to avoid possible arrest.

Erdogan told reporters Sunday, "I am following the [incident] and we will inform the world whatever the outcome" of the official probe.

The interview briefly touched on the Khashoggi case, with the crown prince stating he had no knowledge of the journalist's fate or whereabouts and that he had left the Istanbul consulate.

Mr Erdogan was more circumspect, saying on Sunday he remained "positive" and would await the results of an investigation as Turkish authorities continue to look at camera footage and airport arrivals and departures.

Turkish officials have said they fear the columnist was killed inside the premises.

The Turkish government is looking into Khashoggi's disappearance.

The Saudi writer spent previous year in the U.S.in self-imposed exile, after he fled the kingdom amid a crackdown on intellectuals and activists who criticized the policies of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Istanbul prosecutors are investigating the incident, while the consulate said on Twitter that it was working in coordination with Turkish authorities. He also reiterated that Khashoggi had left the building. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) said in a string of tweets Monday that "if there is any truth to the allegations of wrongdoing by the Saudi government it would be devastating to the US-Saudi relationship and there will be a heavy price to be paid - economically and otherwise".

Ties between Ankara and Riyadh are at a low point over Turkey's support for Qatar in its year-long dispute with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations.

Saudi Arabia denies the suggestion.

Turkey's foreign ministry on Wednesday summoned Saudi Arabia's ambassador over Mr Khashoggi. Turkish officials have also claimed he was killed and other reports say Saudi Arabia sent a 15-member team to carry out a "pre-planned murder". Saudi officials say he left shortly afterwards but his fiancee, who was waiting outside, said he never came out.

"What we do care about is Jamal's well-being and revealing the truth about what occurred", the ambassador said.

The Turkish private NTV television said Ankara requested permission for Turkish investigators to search the consulate building in Istanbul, but a Foreign Ministry official would not confirm the report.

We initially thought Jamal Khashoggi was kept at the guest house [at the consulate] and that he was taken out afterwards.

When asked if Mr Khashoggi faced charges in Saudi Arabia, the crown prince said his country would need to know where he was first.

His firsthand knowledge of the region and nexus with all kinds of people wielding authority made him suitable to be handpicked in an advisory capacity for the Saudi intelligence and he regularly advised the Saudi intelligence chief, Prince Turki al Faisal on sensitive matters.

In a March 6 Guardian editorial co-authored with Robert Lacey, he wrote: "For his domestic reform programme, the crown prince deserves praise".
