Report: Giants place OT Flowers on trade block, may cut

The New York Giants were hoping to find a trade partner for offensive lineman Ereck Flowers prior to 4 p.m. Tuesday, but with nothing materializing, they instead made a decision to release him outright.

The Giants did not pick up Flowers' fifth-year option, so his rookie contract expires after this season and he will be a free agent in March. Louis Rams selecting Todd Gurley. However, Flowers's struggles protecting quarterback Eli Manning's blindside compelled the Giants to sign veteran left tackle Nate Solder this offseason.

Scouts were concerned about Flowers' pass protection abilities coming out of college, and he proved those concerns to be warranted. The Giants placed the former first-round pick on waivers Tuesday.

Trading Flowers figures to be unlikely because any interested team would have take on his $2.39 million guaranteed base salary, Schefter noted.

Apparently, the Giants did not want to wait that long to make the move or it was abundantly clear that no one wanted him.

Limit climate change ? do everything and do it now, scientists plead

Giants coach Pat Shurmur confirmed that the report is accurate.

"We appreciate Ereck Flowers' efforts with the team".

With an open spot on their practice squad as the result of this shuffle, the Giants also announced that kicker Marshall Koehn, who was with the team during the preseason, had been signed as insurance for Aldrick Rosas, who missed practice on Monday with a sore quadriceps. "Sometimes a change of scenery is good for a person". When he finally showed, they still immediately inserted him as the first-team right tackle.

Flowers lost his starting job to Chad Wheeler in Week 3.
