I’ll cut aid to Honduras unless the ‘caravan’ stops

Back in April, a "caravan" of immigrants marching across Central America toward the U.S. border drew the attention of President Trump.

The organizer of a migrant caravan from Honduras was detained on Tuesday in Guatemala as the US government threatened to withdraw aid from both countries if the flow of migrants north to the United States was not stopped.

Trump said in a tweet that he had told Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández that if the migrants are not returned to Honduras, the United States will cease all aid to Honduras, effective immediately. She said she could not find work and feared for their safety.

Many in the caravan traveled light, with just backpacks and bottles of water.

A former Homeland Security official from the Obama administration, who said he became a "target" for blowing the whistle on the extremely lax vetting procedure for sponsors of illegal immigrant children, spoke out Tuesday about the new throng of migrants headed north toward the U.S. Some pushed strollers or carried toddlers on their shoulders. After a standoff of about two hours, the migrants began walking again.

A video from the Daily Mail showed the caravan being blocked by riot police from entering in Guatemala, but they relented and the migrants continued their journey. The migrants refused to budge and eventually officers again let them pass.

The caravan of Hondurans has already crossed into Guatemala, increasing in size as the group grew from 160 to an estimated 2,000 by Monday, according to the Associated Press.

Local media coverage prompted hundreds more to join during the weekend as the group moved toward Guatemala.

She said that "some in the United States will be quick to raise alarms about a supposed risky immigrant invasion" and that "others will view these migrants with compassion and as further evidence of the need for comprehensive immigration reform".

The latest caravan was launched a day after Vice President Pence urged the presidents of Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala to persuade their citizens not to enter the United States illegally.

Mexico has also said it would block members of the caravan from entering its territory if they did not have permits.

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez said last month cuts in USA support for Central America would hinder efforts to stem illegal immigration as he welcomed China's growing diplomatic presence in the region as an "opportunity".
