Jamal Khashoggi: Trump suggests 'rogue killers' to blame

However, on Monday, the United States leader came up with a milder statement on the matter, saying that some "rogue killers" could've been responsible for the crime, citing King Salman of Saudi Arabia's "firm" denial that Riyadh had anything to do with Khashoggi disappearance.

Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi is still missing, almost two weeks after he entered the Saudi Arabian Consulate in Istanbul.

Turkish officials have said they believe Khashoggi - a Washington Post contributor who was critical of Prince Mohammed's policies - was killed inside the mission, and lurid claims have even been leaked that he was tortured and even dismembered.

The shows of support came before CNN and the New York Times reported that Saudi Arabia was in fact preparing to acknowledge its role in Khashoggi's death by claiming that it was an interrogation gone wrong. He said in Georgia that Pompeo may add a stop in Turkey.

On Monday, the Saudi government permitted Turkish officials to inspect the consulate nearly two weeks after Khashoggi first went missing. "People around the crown prince seem to have been pushing for some partial admission of guilt", he said.

However, the White House brushed aside the Saudi threats, pledging a "swift, open, transparent investigation" into the journalist's disappearance.

A Foreign Ministry official told The Associated Press on Monday that the inspection would be a joint one carried out by Turkish and Saudi officials.

Saudi Arabia has been under intense worldwide pressure to explain Khashoggi's apparent death.

The impact on relations between the US and Saudi Arabia could be far reaching, if it's found that the Saudis were involved with Khashoggi's disappearance, said Michael Morrell, former acting and deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency and a CBS national security correspondent, on CBS This Morning.

Seasoned observers of Middle East politics, including some at senior levels of the Turkish government, have speculated for days about the likelihood that the royal court would seek to accuse a "rogue" operator within the Saudi security services of killing Khashoggi. "But if he doesn't, Congress will, that, I can tell you, with 100% certainty".

Just last week, Trump vowed to uncover the truth about what happened to Khashoggi and promised "severe punishment" for those responsible.

The White House previously brushed aside threats by Saudi Arabia that it may economically retaliate for any US punitive action imposed over the suspected murder of Khashoggi, pledging a "swift, open, transparent investigation" into his disappearance. Rubio said U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin should also withdraw, but White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said the Treasury chief is still planning to go.

Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stressed that Saudi Arabia should prove its non-involvement in the journalist's disappearance.

Saudi flags, photos of the king and crown prince looking stern, and pro-Saudi hashtags were making the rounds on social media Monday with a common theme: Saudi Arabia and its ruling family are a "red line".

Republican Marco Rubio of Florida says that includes the multi-billion dollar arms deal that President Donald Trump wants to preserve. Several business leaders and media outlets have backed out of the upcoming investment conference in Riyadh, called the Future Investment Initiative.
