Kavanaugh confirmation all but sure after bitter fight

Brett Kavanaugh: Key US Senators Back Embattled Supreme Court Choice

"What left wing groups and their Democratic allies have done to Judge Kavanaugh is nothing short of monstrous", Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said on the chamber's floor before the vote.

Senate Republicans, except for Lisa Murkowski, stood by Kavanaugh in a move that could resonate, particularly with women voters, in the November 6 elections to determine control of the Senate and House of Representatives.

The Kavanaugh fight has riveted Americans just weeks before November 6 midterm elections in which Democrats are trying to take control of Congress from the Republicans.

The final Senate vote is expected Saturday, but enough senators have committed to backing him after a tumultuous political battle inflamed by allegations by California professor Christine Blasey Ford that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were teenagers in the early 1980s.

The confirmation will mark a major victory for President Donald Trump, who will soon be able to take credit for appointing two conservative justices to the Supreme Court during his relatively brief time in office so far.

Collins added she will announce her ultimate decision on Kavanaugh's confirmation at 3 p.m. ET Friday.

Collins said she had met with "thousands of my constituents", noting that both supporters and opponents of the judge had given her their opinions in the days since Ford came forward to accuse Kavanaugh of sexual assault.

In the pivotal moment Friday, Collins, perhaps the chamber's most moderate Republican, proclaimed her support for Kavanaugh at the end of a Senate floor speech that lasted almost 45 minutes.

Trump joins other first ladies - including Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama - in embarking on solo trips to Africa. A white woman on the roadside held up a handmade sign as the first lady's motorcade passed that said "Melania Me Too".

The Maine senator has been seen as a key swing vote in the confirmation of Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh vehemently denied all those claims.

Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., who has repeatedly battled Trump and will retire in January, said he'd vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation "unless something big changes".

Senate Republicans projected optimism on Thursday after reviewing the results of an FBI investigation into allegations against the nominee that they say indicate there is no corroboration for accusations he has faced. He is up for re-election in West Virginia, a state Trump won overwhelmingly in 2016.

Under pressure from wavering Republicans, GOP leaders agreed to an extraordinary Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last week that mesmerized the nation as Ford nervously recounted her story and said she was "100 percent" certain that Kavanaugh was her attacker.

Trump weighed in shortly after the roll call was announced, tweeting, "Very proud of the U.S. Senate for voting "YES" to advance the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh!".

White House officials were cautiously optimistic going into the final push. But Susan Collins' staff is insisting her vote on the final motion is still undecided. "I know that my tone was sharp, and I said a few things I should not have said".

Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, one of the Democrats who voted against the motion and has vocally opposed Kavanaugh's nomination since accusations of sexual assault arose in July, lamented the vote's passing on CNN. But he added that based on the Federal Bureau of Investigation report, "I have found Judge Kavanaugh to be a qualified jurist who will follow the Constitution and determine cases based on the legal findings before him".

Still, she sent signals that Kavanaugh had cleared a hurdle by reassuring her that he believed the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision on abortion rights is settled law.
