Microsoft says it fixed a Windows 10 update bug that deleted folders

Windows 10 box and spanner

That means you'll be able to upgrade to Windows 10 October 2018 update without fearing loss of data.

Microsoft says that the issue only affected one one-hundredth of one percent of people who had installed the update.

An updated version of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update is distributed to Insider Channels.

On a support page issued on Tuesday, Microsoft's sparse explanation of the bug is as follows: "An incorrect timing calculation may prematurely delete user profiles on devices subject to the "Delete user profiles older than a specified number of day" group policy".

Microsoft chose to remove these duplicate folders through code incorporated into version 1809. However, when Windows 10 version 1809 was installed on those users' systems, it deleted the known folders containing the actual unmoved files, resulting in data loss for those users. That's because Microsoft attempted to fix a previous KFR issue from the April 2018 upgrade, where KFR would create duplicate but empty Known Folders. For example, an empty copy of the original C:\Users\Name\Downloads folder appeared. The company also states it will provide an update as soon as a fixed version of the Windows 10 October 2018 will be rolled out again. Data loss is considered to be a serious effect, but the problem wasn't flagged highly for Microsoft because of the small number of affected users, Cable suggested.

This includes fixes for system components such as the Windows kernel, graphics and file systems, the wireless networking and peripherals subsystems, along with the JET database engine, Windows Media Player and the Edge and Internet Explorer web browsers among others.

Strengthening Hurricane Michael aiming for Florida Panhandle
That's just below the threshold for a "major" hurricane, and forecasters say they still expect Michael to get stronger. With Michael's winds projected to be even stronger than that, Wakulla County residents were urged to evacuate inland.

Users who moved a Known Folder to OneDrive but did not move files in the process had files deleted in the old location.

However, if you're somebody who wants to keep hold of the files they've downloaded for whatever reason, or uses the folder for storage in some way, then obviously this is something you need to be careful around if you're using Disk Cleanup.

Microsoft enabled new feedback functionality today that adds options to classify impact and severity of the reported issue.

Microsoft has also changed the workaround text on its website. Microsoft is working with them to recover the lost files, but it isn't offering any guarantees that their data will get restored.

If you did experience data loss, Microsoft Support advises you call +1-800-MICROSOFT for help.

The fixed versions of Windows are getting floated in Microsoft's Windows Insider Program, which is a program for software testers.
