Oh no! Google kills its popular social network

Google exposed user data, chose not to tell public - WSJ

Google said in the blog post that it "discovered and immediately patched" a bug in March 2018 that potentially allowed app developers to access profile data from users that had not been marked as public.

In the post, Google announced it was closing down the service after the Wall Street Journal revealed the company had known about the bug, which affected all Google+ users, since March this year.

Google Plus was also very user friendly, allowing people to share announcements with friends very easily.

That breach left the personal information of about 500,000 users exposed, and was caused by a bug on a People API on Google+. Google found that no one was using it, saying that "Google+ now has low usage and engagement: 90 percent of Google+ user sessions are less than five seconds".

In a memo cited by the Wall Street Journal, Google's legal and policy staff warned against disclosing the breach, fearing it would draw comparisons to Facebook's mishandling of user data, when more than 50 million Facebook users had their personal information leaked to the data firm Cambridge Analytica.

Google says it will give users a 10-month period to transition out of Google+, slated for completion by the end of next August.

Almost 500,000 members of the Google+ social networking site had their user profile data left out in the open, easily accessible to third-party developers for over two years.

Chinese state councilor meets U.S. state secretary, calling for win-win cooperation
Pompeo told journalists in Seoul that the leader had agreed to open up the Punggye-ri nuclear testing site to inspectors. The Vatican did not comment on the possibility of a papal visit.

The project launched in 2011 as an alternative to other social networks ended up being a huge failure for the company.

We made Google+ with privacy in mind and therefore keep this API's log data for only two weeks. Google will announce new Enterprise-focused products for Google+ in the near future.

In response to this, Google+ will be shutting down for regular users.

"Smith said that despite Google's engineering teams putting in a lot of effort, "[Google+] has not achieved broad consumer or developer adoption, and has seen limited user interaction with apps. Up to 438 applications on Google Plus had access to this API, though Google said they have no evidence any developers were aware of the vulnerability.

So, for example, if you're using your Google account to sing into a new service and it requests access to your Calendar and Drive, you'll be able to grant or deny that permission on a per-service basis. "None of these thresholds were met in this instance". "It's that Google's execs knowingly avoided disclosing an issue because they knew it'd invite gov scrutiny & bad PR".
