Palestinian shoots 3 Israelis in West Bank attack

Israeli security forces search the northern West Bank after a fatal shooting attack in Barkan Industrial Park in the northern West Bank

Ashraf Walid Suleiman Na'alowa from the village of Shweika near Tulkarem entered the industrial park on Sunday morning, shooting two Israelis and severely wounding a third using a locally produced knockoff of the Swedish Carl Gustav sub-machine gun.

Security forces were searching for the suspected perpetrator, Conricus said.

Army spokesman Jonathan Conricus called it a "terrorist attack" but added that other unspecified factors were involved. The terrorist, armed with a homemade weapon, tied up a man and a woman and killed them execution-style.

According to local media, a third woman, 54, was injured and transferred to a hospital.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for his part, vowed to bring the attacker to justice. "I am sure we will catch him and bring him to justice soon".

The industrial zone is located next to the Israeli settlement Barkan and near the settlement of Ariel in the north of the West Bank.

Palestinian militant groups praised the attack, calling it revenge for Israeli "crimes" towards the Palestinians.

Advocates of Israeli settlement policies say the industrial zones are an example of the benefits Palestinians have under Israeli control, including much-needed employment to Palestinians.

This, however, fails to explain the first headline of the New York Times in response to a brutal terror attack on Sunday in the Barkan Industrial Zone where a Palestinian murdered Kim Levengrond Yehezkel, 28, and Ziv Hagbi, 35.

Palestinians often face tough choices in finding employment in the economically struggling West Bank and jobs in Israeli settlements can provide steady income.

Israel settlements are considered illegal under worldwide law and major stumbling blocks to peace as they are built on land the Palestinians see as part of their future state.

More than 50 Israelis and several foreign nationals have been killed since late 2015 in a series of stabbings, shootings and car-ramming attacks, predominantly by Palestinians or Israeli Arabs.
