Please don't call police about 'drunk' birds, department says

Officials in Gilbert Minnesota warned the birds-

Berries ferment with the cold, and because of an early frost in the area, the birds were eating the intoxicating berries before their planned trip to the south for the winter.

The Facebook page's comment section quickly filled with jokes and puns, as well as straight-faced posts from residents who had wondered what the heck was going on.

According to Gilbert police, its received numerous reports of what look to be drunk birds "flying into windows, cars and acting confused".

He added: 'It appears that some birds are getting a little more "tipsy" than normal. The young folks, unable to handle the toxins, are especially affected, police warned.

Police in Gilbert, Minnesota issued a statement to address a growing problem in the small city - drunk birds. 2 birds dove into my windshield both on the way to work and on the way home. "There is no need to call law enforcement about these birds as they should sober up within a short period of time".

"They'll be flying kind of erratically", he said.

"Oh my! That explains all the birds bouncing off my window lately", said one resident.

The sugar in the berries was fermenting and wasn't being digested properly by the birds, a having an intoxicating effect. "We typically see them flying lower than usual through traffic". If they can't fly properly or keep their balance, intoxicated birds are at risk of crashing into hard surfaces. The territory's animal health unit would find them with juice-stained beaks, pop them into hamster cages (or "drunk tanks"), give them a few hours to sober up and then set them free.

As humorous as it might sound, bingeing on berries can be deadly for birds.

"They just get sloppy and clumsy", Dodder said.
