Taika Waititi among the directors of Star Wars TV series The Mandalorian

The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order.

After revealing the title of his Star Wars live-action television series, The Mandalorian, director Jon Favreau went ahead and dropped a first look. That level of talent aligns with what we'd heard about the show's $100 million+ budget, but until the service launches next year we're probably looking at a continual slow-drip of information. The Mandalorians are known for their bounty hunting in the Star Wars universe, so he or she will presumably skulk about the far reaches of the galaxy, far from the jurisdiction of the New Republic.

The synopsis for the show runs thus: "After the stories of Jango and Boba Felt, another warrior emerged in the Star Wars universe". The show is likely to travel to the home planet of Mandalore, but it's unclear where this photo is set. The main name bound to excite fans is Waititi, who is not only a genre fav after his work in the MCU, but also regularly gets fancast as Boba Fett in online circles.

According to Making Star Wars, Filoni will reportedly direct episodes one and five, Famuyiwa will direct episodes two and six, Chow will direct episodes three and seven, Howard will direct episode four and Waititi will direct episode eight. Karen Gilchrist is being credited as co-executive producer.

A Disney statement said Jon Favreau would write the series, and be its executive producer.

A brief tweet from the official Star Wars account declared on Thursday: "Production on #TheMandalorian, Star Wars" first live-action series, has begun!'

In December, speculation was rife that Waititi would have a part in future Star Wars projects.
