Terence Crawford defeats Jose Benavidez Jr. to retain WBO welterweight title

Terrance Crawford weighs in

The American (34-0-KO25) could now put his unbeaten record on the line against IBF champion Errol Spence after inflicting a first career defeat on Benavidez (27-1-KO18) at the end of a contest which had long-since developed into a personal grudge match. Midway, Crawford began to pull away.

Terence Crawford controlled José Benavidez the entire fight, landing a devastating knockdown in the 12th round, with Benavidez having no answer when he gets up, resulting in a TKO victory. Time was 2:42.

This was a fight Crawford personally asked for and he is ready to humble the undefeated Arizona based boxer.

The home favourite told ESPN: "I did what I said I was going to do".

And Crawford revealed that his plan had been to tire Benavidez before the big finish, applying pressure throughout to wear down the 26-year-old. "And that's what Bud did!"

Mattis: Trump says defense chief’s job is ‘100 percent’ safe
When asked about Mattis' potential departure, Trump replied, "Well, I don't know". However Mattis had never identified himself as a Republican, nor as a Democrat.

"Oh man, it was coming", Crawford said of his finishing flurry.

"I gave him a good fight", Benavidez said. He slowed down tremendously. The crowd was the largest that Crawford has drawn to date and he gave the hometown fans a show to remember. Crawford retaliated with a ridiculously fast punch but missed Benavidez, who leaned back to duck the shot.

Crawford repeated: "Three times in 2019!"

In the co-main event, 2016 U.S. Olympic silver medalist and top featherweight prospect Shakur Stevenson of Newark, New Jersey, stopped Viorel Simion of Romania just before the bell ending the first round.
