Toyota recalls 2.4 million hybrid cars over stall fault

The Toyota Prius could be impacted

Toyota has issued a recall for 2.43 million hybrid vehicles around the world due to potential problems with stalling.

The recall applies to some Toyota Prius and Auris hybrids made from October 2008-November 2014.

The carmaker is recalling 2.43 million of its hybrid vehicles worldwide, including 1.25 million in Japan, 807,000 in the U.S., 290,000 in Europe and 3,000 in China.

In 2015, it had to recall 6.5 million vehicles globally over a faulty window switch that was liable to short-circuit.

According to Toyota, in rare situations, the auto models included in the recall would lose power completely when entering the failsafe mode, which could lead to a collision, especially when driven at high speeds.

"We've found that in rare situations, the vehicle may not enter a fail-safe driving mode as intended", Tania Saldana, a Toyota spokeswoman, said in an email to NPR. If that happens at higher speeds, there is increased risk of a crash.

Soyuz MS-08 with three-man crew on board separates from ISS
An Indian astronaut may soon visit the International Space Station (ISS), informed a source in the Russian space industry. The descent will occur at the truck Union MS-08 - the same, in the hull of a newly found hole.

Toyota said it was not aware of any actual accidents caused by the fault.

Should this occur, the vehicle could lose power and stall, although functions such as the power steering, brakes and lights would still work. This could cause the auto to stall, which could increase the risk of a crash when driving at high speeds.

Japan's transportation ministry said Toyota had reported three malfunctions locally related to the issue, but no accidents.

"We can't assess the impact of the recall immediately as we first need to analyse details of the problem, but the latest recall at least raised concerns as Prius is Toyota's leading brand", said Satoru Takada, an analyst at TIW, a Tokyo-based research and consulting firm.

Affected drivers will be sent a letter asking them to book in their vehicle for a software upgrade at their nearest Toyota retailer.
