Trump Criticizes Rush To Condemn Saudi Arabia Over Khashoggi

Trump Speaks to Saudi King, Sends Pompeo for Follow-Up

Khashoggi disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to obtain documents to marry his fiancée, Hatice Cengiz.

Turkish and USA media has published leaked reports of what officials said were audio recordings that prove the Washington Post columnist was beaten, drugged and brutally killed before his body was disposed of.

They reportedly spoke for less than 15 minutes. But the royal family will insist more than a dozen operatives flown to Turkey were not authorized to kill him and cut him up, and will call that "rogue" behavior - a concept for which Trump played canary in the coal mine one day earlier in a pop-up presser on the White House lawn.

Pompeo has focused on the need to investigate, and has generally avoided trying to determine what actually happened to Khashoggi on October 2.

Khashoggi had penned articles critical of the country's rulers.

Other business leaders who have said they would not attend the conference, including Uber Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi, said they were concerned about Khashoggi's disappearance.

After Utaybi told the interrogators to "do it somewhere else outside or I will be in trouble", he was told to "shut up if you want to live when you are back in Arabia".

Mr Erdogan said: "The investigation is looking into many things such as toxic materials and those materials being removed by painting them over".

The Kingdom is attempting to distance Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman from the murder by saying it was "unintentional"-the result of a "botched operation" by rogue Saudi agents".

Trump's remarks were his most robust defense yet of the Saudis, a USA ally he has made central to his Mideast agenda.

It was the second-such extraordinary search of land considered under global law to be Saudi sovereign soil after Turkish police searched the consulate through the early morning Tuesday. Their search included the roof and garage, and employed a drone to surveil the premises.

She welcomed the agreement that has allowed investigators to conduct an examination inside the consulate and possibly also at the residence of the Saudi Arabian Consul-General in Istanbul.

"Yesterday evening, unfortunately, police could not search the Saudi consul's residence".

Pompeo will hold talks in Turkey on Wednesday, the Turkish foreign ministry said, after his visit to Riyadh. "We have said before that Saudi Arabia must cooperate with us in every aspect without delay".

An 11-member Saudi investigation team arrived at the consul's Istanbul residence, broadcaster CNN Turk said. Another is identified in a diplomatic directory from 2007 as a first secretary at the Saudi Embassy in London.

Though the Khashoggi case has dominated his talks so far, Pompeo has raised other issues on his last-minute trip. "Nothing happens in Saudi Arabia without MBS knowing it", he said.

"Here we go again with, you know, you're guilty until proven innocent", he said. "I don't like that".

Several of the members of the alleged hit team were found to have close ties to Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, according to a photo analysis by the New York Times.
