Trump raises economic concerns over halting Saudi arms sales

Saudi stocks crash over Khashoggi

The rights group Prisoners of Conscience, which is an independent non-governmental organization advocating human rights in Saudi Arabia, announced in a post on its official Twitter page that it did not dismiss the possibility that Khashoggi's sudden disappearance was an attempt to silence the writer.

US President Donald Trump has expressed concern about the writer's disappearance. The White House must respond within 120 days, setting out what actions it proposes to take.Trump told Fox News in an interview on Wednesday night that "so far it's looking a little bit like" the Saudis are behind Khashoggi's disappearance but said it was too early to say how the United States might respond. "Hopefully that will sort itself out". Airport security officials now say they checked all bags that the Saudi teams took with them from the consulate to the airport and say there were no suspicious items in any of the items loaded on to the jets for their return journeys to Riyadh. His fiancee and friends have said he did not leave the building. "The consulate officials can not save themselves by simply saying 'he has left, '" the Turkish president added.

"People who are arrested are not even dissidents, they are close to the government, to the royal family, but they have independent minds", the Saudi journalist said, according to the recording.

The country's foreign ministry said Saudi Arabia was "open to co-operation" and a requested search of the building could now go ahead as part of the investigation.

Khashoggi, a prominent Saudi journalist, vanished October 2 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

During a trip to Turkey, he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to get papers ahead of his upcoming marriage, but he hasn't been seen since.

David Rohde, executive editor of The New Yorker tweeted out, "The journalist Jamal Khashoggi had said that the Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, has 'no tolerance or willingness to accommodate critics'".

Mahoney said Khashoggi's disappearance is "designed, in a very brutal way, to send a message 'if you speak out against the Saudi government, if it could happen to him, it could happen to you"'.

China shares tumble as investors dump stocks across the board
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index slid 3.72%, or 104.84 points, to 2,716.51. It was off 0.55 per cent by mid-morning.

Meanwhile, Turkish authorities are scouring motorway camera footage in the hopes of finding a black van they suspect carried Khashoggi's body out of the consulate.

On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he's personally "chasing" the investigation into the disappearance of his friend, and that Turkish officials are investigating "everything".

On his first global trip as president, Trump visited Saudi Arabia and announced $110 billion in proposed arms sales.

Khashoggi had fled his homeland in September past year and had been living in self-imposed exile in the United States, where he had applied for USA citizenship, Cengiz said.

"Deeply troubled to hear reports about Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi".

Turkish officials claim Khashoggi was killed inside the building, but Saudi Arabia denies the allegations.

"We have seen conflicting reports on the safety and whereabouts of prominent Saudi journalist and Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi", Pompeo said in an October 8 statement. "It is not possible for us to remain silent regarding such an occurrence, because it is not a common occurrence", he said.

The European Union fully supports U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who called on Riyadh to investigate Khashoggi's disappearance, EU policy chief Federica Mogherini said. "It would be a violation of worldwide law to harm, arrest or detain people at a diplomatic mission, he said, and noted that no such thing had ever happened in Turkey's history".
